Mentality
Jez: Listen up, in modern-day football I think this one is the key. It’s the hardest attribute to pick up but in many ways the most important. That’s why the FA is now very big on the psychological side of the game. In the old days, it was always players like Roy Keane, Patrick Vieira and John Terry that were mentioned as mentally strong players, but don’t think it’s just some players in a team who need to be mentally strong. It’s not just the quarter-backs or centre-midfielders who need this quality. The fact is that you need it in all positions and that includes the creative ones. Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are both strong psychologically. Billy: Precisely, Jez. Look at that: the two biggest players in the world are really big on this topic. They’ve even talked about how important it is to get the right mentality. Ronaldo said mental strength is ‘just as important as physical strength and it helps me to achieve more on and off the pitch.’ He says that listening to the right music before a match helps motivate him.
Adapted from: F2: Ultimate Footballer by The F2 © 2019. Adapted for accessibility under CLA Licence. Do not share.
Jez: Yeah, and when Messi spoke about success, he said: ‘ For me it’s all about having the courage to get up and try again.’ And he even explained why he has that courage – he said it’s through his ‘love for the game.’ There are so many players who have a strong mentality. Andrea Pirlo, for instance, was one of the most composed players I’ve ever seen. He wasn’t just physically composed but mentally too. That’s no coincidence – I don’t think you can really have one without the other.
Billy: I always think back to David Beckham’s mental strength after what he went through. In 1998 he got sent off in the World Cup and faced huge abuse and even threats. People were properly nasty to him, but he bounced back and won everyone over. That’s incredible mentality right there. It really is vital because you can’t win trophies without having players in your side who have the right mentality and leadership skills.
