Greek "kalanda" On Christmas Eve, children prepare to sing carols (kalanda). They knock from door to door accompanied by the traditional iron triangle and other musical instruments. The carols announce the joy of the birth of Christ, but also the welcome of the new year in every home.
Another custom is breaking a pomegranate as we enter our house after New Year’s Eve, something that traditionally brings good luck and prosperity to the members of the family.

Clean Monday Clean Monday is the first day of Lent and marks the beginning of fasting. This year it will be celebrated on the 2nd of March. On this day, people eat special fasting foods such as flatbread (lagana), fish roe spread (tarama), olives, and halva.
Families often go outdoors to celebrate together.
A favorite tradition is flying kites high in the sky for joy and good luck. 🪁
The Polytechnic Uprising: Fighting for Freedom and Justiceolytechnic Uprising
On November 17, 1973, students at the Athens Polytechnic protested against the military dictatorship in Greece. During the night, the army intervened and a tank broke through the university gates, leading to deaths and injuries. The uprising became a lasting symbol of resistance, freedom, and democracy.
World Teachers' Day
Is held annually on 5 October to celebrate all teachers around the globe.It commemorates the 1966 signing of the UNESCO/ILO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers. This was a landmark document that set standards for the rights and responsibilities of teachers, as well as standards for their initial preparation, further education, recruitment, and employment. In Romania October 5 is a non-working day for teachers.

This day is typically observed on the first Thursday of November each year. It aims to raise awareness about the effects of bullying and violence in schools and online. It is the oldest and most prestigious classical music festival in Romania after the George Enescu Festival. This eventvent is organized by the Filarmonica de Stat „Transilvania” (Transylvania State Philharmonic).It is widely considered the most important classical music event in Transylvania, attracting world-class conductors and soloists.tThe58th edition took place in October 2025. The 2025 edition was particularly special for a few reasons:. Much of the festival moved to the brand-new Sala Héritage at the National Academy of Music "Gheorghe Dima" (on Bucium Street), which is part of the most modern musical campus in Romania

The greek Carnival, known as Apokries is a festive period marking the transition from winter to spring and the preparation for Lent. The word itself means 'abstinence from meat' (apo-kreas)
The celebrations have roots in ancient Dionysian festivals, where people wore masks and costumes to honor the god of wine and celebrate nature's rebirth. Today, the tradition of wearing masks symbolizes anonymity and social equality, allowing everyone to celebrate and satirize freely. It serves as a joyful 'release' before the solemn period of fasting begins. Today, the Greek carnival culminates in grand parades in cities like Patras, Xanthi, and Rethymno, keeping the spirit of satire and joy alive. This year parades will take place on the 28th of February.
Saint Parascheva (Sfânta Parascheva) of Iași
is the most beloved saint in Romania .Her feast day on October 14th is the centerpiece of the largest religious pilgrimage in Romania. She lived in the 11th century and was born in Epivata (near Constantinople, present-day Turkey). She is known as "Cuvioasa" (Devout/Venerable) because she was a nun who lived a life of asceticism, prayer, and charity. Her relics (remains) were brought to Iași in 1641 by Prince Vasile Lupu. He received them as a gift from the Patriarch of Constantinople after paying off the Patriarchate's debts to the Ottomans.. Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims (sometimes over 300,000) travel to Iași from all over Romania and neighboring countries.

Victory over Fascism Day, observed on May 8 in Slovakia, is a public holiday marking the end of World War II in Europe (1945). It is a day to honor fallen soldiers and victims of the war, with ceremonies and wreath-laying at memorials. Today, it also serves as a reminder of peace, freedom, and international solidarity.

(Ziua Armatei Române) is celebrated annually on October 25th. It is one of the most important dates in the Romanian military calendar, honoring the sacrifices of Romanian soldiers and marking a pivotal moment in the nation's history during World War II.. The date was chosen to commemorate October 25, 1944, the day the Romanian Army liberated the city of Carei (and Satu Mare). During World War II, Northern Transylvania had been occupied by Horthyist Hungary following the Second Vienna Award (19 After Romania switched sides to join the Allies in August 1944, the army fought to regain this lost territory. The liberation of Carei marked the complete liberation of the last piece of Romanian soil from foreign occupation.
