Competencies Assessment Manager in Canvas

We are constantly evolving in the evaluation of competencies, strengthening an integrated and holistic process.

ACTION

Review the following information by clicking on each icon.

Main professor view

Once inside the Competency Evaluation button, professors have two different views to perform the evaluation: a) Evaluation of subcompetencies per Student.1 b) May assess by subcompetency.2

Student Evidence View

The functionalities that will facilitate the evaluation process include the visualization of the grade1 and the initial feedback2 of the evidence that has been evaluated in Canvas. To display the evidence, it must meet the following naming conditions:It must be name as: Evidence.#. Evidence name (Example: Evidence.1.Argumentative Exam)3 and it must be published in Canvas.

Note: If there is more than one piece of evidence, a function is included to expand or collapse the visualization of all the evidence with its grade and feedback.

Student Visualization

The student visualization includes a filter and a search bar to facilitate the evaluation. Additionally, it indicates the total number of students in the group and the number of students fully evaluated. Through a filter, you can visualize:- All students.1 - Students with all subcompetencies evaluated.2 - Students with some subcompetency pending evaluation.3 As well as a search field by name, surname, or student ID number.4

Subcompetencies Evaluation Indicator

Each student has an indicator showing if all their subcompetencies have been evaluated, displayed in green.1 If any subcompetency is pending evaluation, the counter will be shown in orange and indicates how many subcompetencies have been fully evaluated.2

Subcompetencies View

Within the subcompetencies section, you can filter to visualize all the subcompetencies of the learning unit and their rubric, only the evaluated ones, or only the pending evaluation ones.1 Additionally, it has a "Completed"2 label to indicate that the evaluation of that subcompetency has been completed. To evaluate, you must select the corresponding level of achievement descriptor3 for each student’s performance in the subcompetency.

Evaluate by Competency View

In the "Evaluate by Competency"1 tab, to switch to another subcompetency, there is a filter in the upper right corner2 where you can select the subcompetency to evaluate.

Verify the Progress of Subcompetency Evaluation

The platform offers the following progress indicators to help the professor verify their progress in evaluating subcompetencies:- All students evaluated: indicates that there are no pending evaluations in the learning unit; this label is shown in green.1 - Completed: indicates that the subcompetency/competency is evaluated; this label is shown in green.2 - Students pending evaluation: indicates that there are still students with subcompetencies/competencies pending evaluation in the learning unit; this label is shown in orange.3 - Pending: indicates that the subcompetency/competency is pending evaluation by the professor; this label is shown in orange.4 Additionally, on the right side, it indicates which student and how many subcompetencies are pending evaluation.5

Key points to be considered

GRADE SUBMISSION

For technical requirements, the evidence must respect this naming structure:

Grade submission can only be completed if 100% of the subcompetencies of the UF (Learning Unit) have been evaluated for all the students in the group.

Evidence(dot)#(dot)Evidence name

Evidence.#.Evidence name

Example: Evidence1.Research Report Evidence.2.Final Presentation

If not done on time and correctly, both numerical grades and levels of achievement of the subcompetencies will be recorded as SC, and a request to change the grade and level of achievement will need to be made through the official process, with the necessary approvals obtained.

And that’s it. Everything in one place!

Thanks to these improvements, evaluation will be agile and integrated; the grade and level of achievement of the subcompetencies—in applicable UFs—will be sent together from Canvas.

Starting January 2026, eLumen will no longer be available...

The UFs (Learning Units) that are evaluation milestones will have the Competency Evaluation button in their Canvas group.

Remember!

Located in the main menu of the group in Canvas, it will be used to record the level of achievement demonstrated by students through their evidence. Feedback on the evidence will be provided in Canvas using SpeedGrader, but the evaluation of subcompetencies will be holistic and integrated into the rubrics contained in the Competency Evaluation button.
