How do you read an analog clock?

What is a healthy plate?

How do you read an analog clock?

An analog clock has:

  • A circle with numbers from 1 to 12
  • A short hand (the hour hand)
  • A long hand (the minute hand)
Start with the Hour Hand. Look at the short hand first: It points to the hour 10. Now Check the Minute Hand. The long hand tells us the minutes. Each number stands for 5 minutes:
  • 1 = 5 minutes
  • 2 = 10 minutes
  • 3 = 15 minutes
  • ...4. Put it Together!
Here:
  • The short hand points to the 10th hour
  • The long hand is on the 2
This clock says it’s 10:10 (ten past ten)! What about the clock on the wall?

What is the healthy eating pyramid?

At the base are good habits: You should stay active and avoid eating too much or too little! Then, there are the vegetables, fruits, whole grains and healthy fats and oils. They should be the things you eat the most. Then there are healthy sources of protein: Nuts, seed, beans, tofu, fish, chicken and eggs are all good options! Dairy is fine in small quantities: yoghurts, cheese etc. At the top are the things you can eat, but in moderation: sweet drinks, sugary food, red meat, refined grains etc.

The healthy eating pyramid, Harvard University www.thenutritionsource.org

What is a healthy plate?

  • Half the plate should be vegetables and fruits
  • A quarter should be whole grains
  • A quarter should be healthy protein
  • Next to it: drink water and use healthy oils for cooking or serving !

Chapter 1

Zombies?

Busy with Roblox.

Noah gave his football a lazy kick, sending it rolling across the empty park. It wobbled to a sad stop. No one kicked it back. No whoops of laughter, no thundering footsteps chasing after it. Just the lonely whisper of the wind.A few months ago, Old Town Park was "the place to be". Every afternoon, Noah and his friends would race along the lawn, shouting and laughing, playing football until the sun disappeared into the trees. But now? He could barely get a text reply.

We'll take notes!

Maybe later, I'm tired.

Just need to finish my cabin in Minecraft!

Noah groaned just thinking about it. Roblox, TikTok, endless videos… His friends were glued to their screens like old chewing gum on the sidewalk. When he did manage to see them, they barely looked like he remembered. Pale faces, droopy eyes, slow, shuffling steps... They’re like zombies, Noah thought. Screen-zombies. And if he was being honest with himself, Noah wasn’t much better sometimes. There were days when he'd tumble into bed feeling heavy and grumpy after a full afternoon of "just one more video."

I’m going to fix this zombie epidemic. Somehow.

He didn't want this to be normal. Noah loved sports: football matches that turned into wild sprints, skateboarding down the biggest hills he could find (sometimes crashing spectacularly). He loved doodling crazy comic books and helping his mom test out weird new recipes that sometimes exploded in the oven. He missed real fun. Real adventures. Real friends. Noah caught the football under his foot and stared across the empty park. I don’t want to just sit here feeling sorry for myself, he thought, squaring his shoulders. He would be the hero his friends needed.

Chapter 2

Time for action!

Oh, Hey Noah.

The next morning was a Saturday, so after breakfast and football practice, Noah hopped on his bike and raced down the street. His mind was buzzing with plans. He wasn’t about to just sit around while his friends melted into screen zombies. Not if he could help it. He skidded into Liam’s driveway, nearly falling, and rang the doorbell. Nothing. He rang again. Finally, the door creaked open, and there stood Liam, hair sticking up like he’d fought a pillow and lost, his tablet clutched tightly in both hands.

How long have you been on that thing?

I dunno... Since breakfast?

Noah stepped inside, eyebrows shooting up in disbelief as Liam stumbled backwards onto the couch, still locked into whatever game he was playing.

Wait what?! Let me calculate, how long ago was that?

I had breakfast at 8.

That was four hours ago!

Right then, the backyard door slid open and Mia stuck her head inside. She lived next door and had come over when she spotted Noah’s bike in front of the house.

Oh hey Mia!

Hey guys, what’s going on?

Trying to solve the screen-zombie mystery!

Noah waved dramatically at Liam like he was a museum exhibit called Homo Tableticus.

Honestly, I get it. My mom took away my tablet this morning, and I was bored out of my mind. I didn't even know what to do. I just sat there... staring at the wall like a potato.

Well, at least you’re not stuck in Roblox-land.

Yeah, well, what's your guilty pleasure, Mister Perfect?

Uh... Maybe... I've watched a lot of skateboard trick videos this week. Not practicing. Just... watching.

Looks like none of us is immune to the screen-zombie virus!

Maybe the real mystery, is how much time we all lose without noticing.

That's true!Let's figure it out for all of us!

Liam

  • Gaming: 2 hours and 50 minutes
  • Watching videos: 3 hours
  • Homework: 1 hour
  • Messaging strangers: 1 hour
  • Eating: 2 hours
  • Hygiene: 1 hour
  • Sleeping: 7 hours
  • Going to school by car: 2 x 5 minutes
  • School: 6 hours

Noah • Skateboard videos: 1 hour• Practising tricks: 40 minutes• Homework: 1 hour• Gaming : 1 hour• Cooking with mom: 30 minutes• football practice: 1 hour• Hygiene: 1 hour• Sleeping: 11 hours• Biking to school: 2 x 10 minutes• School: 6 hours

Mia • Watching videos: 1 hour• Drawing doodles: 30 minutes• Homework: 1 hour• Messaging friends: 1 hour• Gymnastics practice: 2 hours• Eating: 1 hour• Hygiene: 1 hour• Sleeping: 10 hours• Walking to school 2 x 15 minutes• School: 6 hours

I guess... I didn’t really think about it...

Eum, Liam, are you actually talking to strangers online?

A lot of our free time is gobbled up by screens! And Liam... I don’t think you are sleeping enough. But it is difficult to understand all this data like that.

What if we build paper clocks? We slice the day into pieces and see where our time is actually going and what we want to do about it!

The three of them looked at each other. Operation Save the Screen-Zombies was officially underway.

Yes good idea!

Your turn! Will you help us plan our days to avoid being zombified?

Chapter 3

Food for thought

A few days later, Noah, Mia, and Liam met up at the park for a football match. They kicked the ball around for a while, but it didn’t take long before Liam dropped dramatically onto the grass, gasping for air.

I think... I'm dyiiiiinnnng...

Maybe it’s not just about screens. Maybe we need to think about our fuel too.

They all laughed and plopped down on the grass, brushing their hair out of their sweaty faces.

Yes, let's look at our snackboxes!

You’re not dying. You’re just super out of shape!

I don't think you have to! Food is like fuel. Maybe we just need to add something healthier, not take away everything we love!

Cookies and juice are my favourites, but maybe this wasn't the most nutritious choice

They all dug into their backpacks and pulled out their snacks.

It’s true. But crisps make me so happy! I don’t want to give them up!

I read this article about calories and it confuses me a little bit... Some people use calorie counting all the time, while others say it is not a good way to make healthy choices...

Online there are so many different opinions! Look, this is a video of a guy saying bananas are terrible for you. I don't think that's true...

I asked ChatGPT and it told me things that contradict each other...This is very confusing, who can we trust?

They thought for a while, and decided to do some research. They rapidly discovered something worrisome...

Wait, I know who we can trust! My aunt is a nutritionist! Maybe she can help us!

Great idea, let's go visit her!

Then, Liam perked up!

Of course, ask away!

Hey Auntie! We have questions for you, can you help us?

A couple of days later, Auntie Clara welcomed them in her office. They had come prepared with a ton of questions.

Don’t forget to move your body every day. Drinking enough water and getting outside are important too!

Auntie Clara explained the Healthy Eating Pyramid to them. This is like a guide to help you grow strong and feel good. It says to eat lots of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and good quality fats like olive oil, for instance. Protein is also essential. You can have a little dairy too, but sugary drinks and foods are better in moderation!

When you make your snacks, consider them as little meals! You can build them with this formula!

So we can actually build super snacks!

Auntie Clara then showed them a graph: the Healthy Eating Plate. Half the plate should be filled with colourful fruits and vegetables, while the other half should be split between whole grains and healthy proteins.

Well, you can eat cookies in moderation! They have too much sugar if you eat the whole package. But you can pair it with something, like yoghurt, nuts, or an apple! That way, you get fibre and protein, which will help you feel full and strong!

It's really cool, but I love cookies. Can I still make them a super snack?

Mia had taken notes, but something still bothered her...

Operation super-snack is on! Will you help us build the ultimate snackbox?

Chapter 4

The great health quest

You guys! I made something awesome!

Hi Mia!

One sunny afternoon, Mia burst into Liam’s living room, waving a sheet of paper excitedly.

I call it the Great Neighbourhood Quest! We have to complete missions at every star to find the secret treasure!

Liam and Noah leaned over the paper. It was a hand-drawn map of their neighbourhood, with stars and notes scattered everywhere.

Is the treasure a real thing?

Of course! But you'll have to earn it!

They grabbed their bikes and set off, smartwatches on their wrists to track their journey. The first mission was at the old oak tree in the park. Challenge 1: Run three laps around the tree without stopping. Noah sprinted ahead, Liam puffed behind, and Mia laughed the whole way.

Challenge 2: Skate to Mrs. Nguyen’s bakery and take a picture of the blue door. They raced along the sidewalks, shouting encouragement. Noah nearly crashed into a bush but recovered, laughing.

Challenge 3: Climb the hill near the playground and spot the kite tied in the tree. By the time they reached the top, all three were panting and sweating, their legs burning, but it felt good, the good kind of tired.

As they paused, checking their map, Liam looked at his smartwatch and frowned. Sure enough, once they opened the settings of their phones and smartwatches and found the privacy toggle, small messages popped up: their steps, their routes… all shared.

Hey… this app just sent a message: ‘Thanks for your location data!’ What?

Weird. Let me check mine too!

They quickly uninstalled the dodgy app and agreed to only use apps that did not share their personal data. Privacy was important, especially on a treasure hunt!

They're using our adventure to collect info about us!

That's sneaky...

They finally reached the last location: Noah’s old treehouse at the back of his garden. Mia climbed up first, almost slipping but catching herself on the ladder. She pulled up a tin box and opened it with a flourish. Inside were three medals made of cardboard and foil, each labelled "Screen-Zombie Slayer." They laughed and high-fived, sitting together high above the ground, looking over the neighbourhood.

Your turn! Can you help us calculate how much we ran, skated and climbed during the Great Neighbourhood Quest?

Conclusion

A few weeks later, if you had wandered past Old Town Park, you wouldn't have believed your eyes. The football field was alive again. There were bikes and scooters tossed onto the grass, backpacks half-zipped, and sneakers kicking up dust. Shouts and laughter filled the air, and the sun bounced off a football flying from kid to kid like it had a mind of its own.

Wow Mia, have you been secretly training with professionals??

Or maybe you are still zombified Liam?

Goaaaal!

Things had definitely changed since the days when Liam could barely run five minutes without gasping like a fish out of water, and since Mia did not know what to do with herself without screens. Now, thanks to a little teamwork, the screen-zombie epidemic was officially defeated. Not that they had become health gurus or anything. They still shared a giant bag of chips at the park sometimes. But everything was different now. Balanced.

More importantly, they had energy again. Energy to race around the park, build forts out of fallen branches, and even plan a “Great Neighbourhood Quest 2.0”, which, according to Mia, would involve bikes, scavenger hunts, and probably some light ninja training. As the sun dipped lower and painted the sky with gold, Noah looked around at his friends running, laughing and shouting across the field. No pale faces. No slow, zombie shuffles. Noah couldn’t help but smile.Mission “Save the Screen-Zombies”: Complete.
