Message from the Headmaster

Dear Parents, I was pleased to be given the opportunity to address the Monastic Community at their Chapter on Tuesday morning, providing an update on the College and giving thanks for all of the support we receive from them. I want to take this opportunity to pay tribute to Mr Will James, Head of Games, who will leave us at the end of this term after over 11 years of service. Will has worked tirelessly to improve our sporting provision for our boys and girls and we wish him good luck with the next phase of his working life outside of education. The Schola is in fine form and I am very much looking forward to Carols by Candlelight in the Abbey Church on Saturday evening. Christmas jumper day on Monday is almost as exciting! Following this, we have a run of Christmas events such as Christmas dinners for Houses on Monday and Tuesday evenings, the London carol service on Tuesday evening, and then our school carol service in the Abbey Church at 15.30 on Wednesday. We intentionally choose this time so that parents who are picking up their children for the holidays can join us. All are welcome! I wish all parents a Merry Christmas and all best wishes for 2026. Jon

Farewell to Will James

We are really sad to be saying goodbye to Will James, our Head of Games and Rugby, after 11 happy years at Ampleforth. Will joined us in June 2014, after a successful career playing rugby for Gloucester Rugby and for Wales Ampleforth has a strong sporting reputation and there have been notable successes and achievements under Will’s leadership. Sport is integral to life here for all our students, not only for those in the top teams or participating in national, regional, and county performance pathways. Will should be very proud of our 100% student participation rate and across such a broad range of sporting opportunities besides the long-established staples of rugby, hockey, netball, cricket, and tennis. Under his tenure, our students have enjoyed fixtures against other schools in everything from water polo to raft-racing, fencing to shooting, and squash to basketball.

Farewell to Will James

As a committed believer that sport is about personal fulfilment and wellbeing, as well as learning to work in teams and develop the resilience necessary to achieve goals, Will has made sure that sport is enjoyable for all through an enthusiastic and positive coaching approach. Often called the Big Man, behind the imposing and unmistakeable looks of a 2nd row rugby player, he is a gentle giant with a kindness and thoughtfulness which have earned him a huge following amongst students and staff alike. His sports tours – and not just the ones to Sri Lanka or South Africa – have never been more popular.

Will, his wife Rose, and daughters Bethan (B20) and Loyce (B22) leave the Valley to return to their family home in Devon. They go with our very best wishes and with a great debt of gratitude.

Christopher Bartle Equestrian Masterclasses

A fantastic opportunity for two of our riders as Liza (10A) and William (12CT) begin a series of elite coaching sessions with Christopher Bartle (A69), High Performance Coach for Great Britain Eventing. Both riders joined Ampleforth in September and have already made a strong impact in our Equestrian Team by qualifying for the NSEA National Championships at Addington on their debut outings. Liza competes across show jumping, eventing and dressage, while William arrived as an accomplished show rider with experience at the Horse of the Year Show and the Royal International Horse Show. Thank you to Christopher for his continued support for the development of the Ampleforth Equestrian Team.

Remembering Philip Lawrence

This week in Assembly we remembered Philip Ambrose Lawrence (E66). After leaving Ampleforth, Philip began a career in teaching and later became Headmaster of St George's Catholic School in London. On 8 December 1995, Philip was murdered while intervening in a gang attack on one of his pupils outside the school gates. Philip was posthumously awarded the Queen's Gallantry Medal. We honour his courage, his selflessness, and his service to others. "Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends".

RSC Chemistry 'Top of the Bench' Competition

A team of four keen chemists represented Ampleforth at Teeside University for the Royal Society of Chemistry's 'Top of the Bench' competition. This long-standing competition stretches students from schools across the UK through written challenges and hands-on practical work. The task focused on a variation of the classic iodine clock reaction. Working from data and measurements, the team predicted when the reaction would occur, tested their prediction with a demonstrator, and analysed their results using graphing and numeracy skills. Our budding chemists returned with new skills and a fresh confidence in their growing expertise.

CCF Field Day - ITC Catterick Garrison

Our Army Section travelled to ITC Catterick for their annual visit to our sponsor, Unit 2 Infantry Training Battalion. Hosted once again by Gurkha Company, the cadets spent the day immersing themselves in a programme designed to challenge and provide cultural insight. They took part in command and observation tasks, survival skills workshops, handled current equipment and weapon systems and tested their accuracy on the Dismounted Close Combat Trainer which is an indoor virtual range. The visit also included a briefing on the history and traditions of the Brigade of Gurkhas, insight into the selection process and time at the Gurkha Temple on site.

Friendship Project - Gifts to Oak Field School

A group of our Year 12 students are running a Friendship Project with Oak Field School in Nottingham, a school for pupils with special educational needs. Students are raising money over the course of this year so they can fund and organise shared social experiences with Oak Field pupils next summer and learn more about each other. As part of this project, our students delivered Christmas cards and gifts to Oak Field.

Message from Mrs Dent

We awoke to this incredible sunrise on Thursday, always grateful for being able to live and learn in such a beautiful setting as the Ampleforth valley. As we head into the final stretch of the term, there is much to look forward to as we get into the Christmas Spirit: Christmas Market shopping trip to York on Sunday, Christmas Jumper Day on Monday, House Christmas dinner on Tuesday evening and the Carol Service to round off the term on Wednesday. The girls are busy wrapping their 'Secret Santa' gifts for each other and preparing their traditional post Christmas Dinner entertainment pieces. Rehearsals are intensifying for those involved in 'Beauty and the Beast' and the team sheet is being prepared for January's interhouse swimming competition, always a highlight of the year. Meanwhile, examination years are lining up their revision schedules for the break as they look ahead to trial examinations in the Lent Term and Year 12 are preparing applications for next summer's Lourdes Pilgrimage. We look forward to seeing many of you at Wednesday's Carol Service and pick-up. All are invited to St Aidan's afterwards, where we'll be ready with a mince pie for the road. With our prayers for a peaceful and joyful Christmas.

Ceri Dent, Housemistress St Aidan's House

A yearly occurance in the house, the girls eagerly left their shoes outside bedroom doors on the eve of 6th December, for St Nicholas to leave small gifts for 'good behaviour', as is the tradition in a number of European countries . We're pleased to say that not a single empty shoe was found in the morning. Year 9 made us smile with their interpretation of the custom by leaving ALL the shoes they own in the corridor!

In other news

It's been a week of celebration for Year 11, with cake for Rebecca's birthday and huge congratulations to Antonina and Connie who yesterday found out that they have been awarded JCB Scholarships in Engineering and Business respectively. We're immensely proud of them.

A reminder that if you'd like to keep up with the goings on of the House and girls, then do find us on social media. Please do also feel free to drop me line with news or pictures of interesting or note-worthy things the girls have been up to in the holidays. It's always nice to share their experience more widely on these pages to celebrate the many gifts and achievements of the girls.

The term is quickly reaching its conclusion, with much excitement and expectation for the final few days. Christmas parties and end of term carol services on the horizon add to the buzz around house. This week has seen birthdays, deli nights, Christmas films and socials along with the usual things. Advent is an opportunity for us to reflect on how fortunate we are. So many positive things to look forward to, one cannot help but be grateful. I look forward to seeing you at the end of term and wish you all a peaceful, joyful and lovely Christmas break.

Message from the Housemaster

Another extremely busy week in St Dunstan's and St Oswald's house, and we are all ready for a holiday. A last push, a lot of wonderful events to look forward to, and then it will be family time and time to relax and enjoy being at home. I would like to thank all of you for your support, your kindness and (often) patience in the last 4 months. I could not be happier with the way the boys are progressing both in house and in the classroom, and I am looking forward to having them all back after the Christmas holidays.

On Friday evening, the boys had some leftover sausages turned into Currywurst.

Saturday, 6th December

On Saturday, our 1st XV won decisively against Giggleswick, with some outstanding individual performances. The photo features our 6 Year 13 DO's boys proudly posing for the camera.

Saturday, 6th December

Elliot had his first ever match as member of the 1st team, and immediately after coming on to the pitch scored his try. What a guy!

Saturday, 6th December

Ambrose scored two tries. It is very confusing to differentiate between friend and foe when the opposition is wearing Ampleforth colours...

Saturday, 6th December

The player of the match award however must go to Olli (Year 11) who had his first cap for the 1st team and immediately scored a hat trick. The future of Rugby in DO's is in very good hands.

Saturday, 6th December

Gotcha!

Saturday, 6th December

Richard had yet another outstanding match.

Saturday, 6th December

Literally unstoppable.

Saturday, 6th December

In the evening, DO's played John's in football. The weather was awful, but that did not deter us. Two very competetive Housemasters eagerly awaiting the kick off.

Wishing you all a happy Christmas!

The end of term is fast approaching, with House paintballing on Sunday, Christmas supper with St Margaret's on Monday and the school's carol service on Wednesday. In the meantime, lessons, games and extra-curricular activities continue in full flow. Year 11 and Year 13, in particular, are getting ready for a break, but one that will, I am sure, be productive. With Year 11 mocks immediately after the Christmas holidays, it is particularly important that the boys make the most of their time to revise actively. And, of course, Year 13 have completed or are near to completing their courses and are turning seriously to revision and practice. I will be sending a final note to parents and families after the end of term, which will highlight some of the news from the last few days, as well as sharing some important housekeeping notes, now that I have had time to 'bed in'. For now, though, I want to wish you all a very happy time over the holidays!

Message from Ms Paterson

Dear Parents, What a joyful Christmas season we are having here at St Margaret’s House! Our Christmas Party was truly a highlight of the term, filled with laughter, festive energy, and an impressive array of enthusiastic competitors. Although we don’t usually single out individuals, it’s safe to say that Mirabelle and Olivia Brett were undeniable stand-outs on the night, bringing sparkle, spirit, and serious skill to the festivities! A special mention must also go to Mollie Shaw, who triumphed in our Fan’natic for Christmas game, and to the ever-versatile Isobel PB, our all-rounder extraordinaire in the Christmas party challenges. Every participant was a terrific sport, and their good humour made the evening a wonderful success. Meanwhile, all our Year 9s were off enjoying the pantomime in Helmsley - oh yes they were! Their evening was reportedly full of fun and festive theatrics, perfectly complementing the celebrations happening back at the House. The merriment has continued throughout the week as we maintain a purposeful yet delightfully festive atmosphere in the House. On Sunday, the study was packed with girls cosy-ing up to watch a beloved Christmas classic Elf while enjoying only the healthiest of snacks (as approved by Buddy the Elf himself!). We are also delighted to share that St Margaret’s has continued its tradition of generosity by supporting CAFOD as our Christmas charity this year. Parents who would like to contribute can follow the link provided or simply ask me to add a donation to the bill. It’s amazing what a small gift can do, just £6 provides a whole vegetable garden to a family in need! https://www.paypal.com/pools/c/9kEVUEtveS With joy and peace to all the women of St Margaret’s, we head into next week ready for more seasonal celebrations, including Christmas shopping trips, Christmas jumper days, festive dinners, and plenty more opportunities to share the magic of this time together. Wishing everyone a peaceful and virus free lead-up to Christmas! Warm regards, Rebecca

Chaplaincy

This week’s deanery, led by Miss Foster, encouraged pupils to reflect on the importance of communication and the influence our words and actions have on others. Through thoughtful discussion and examples, pupils explored how positive communication can build trust, kindness, and stronger relationships. It was a valuable reminder that the way we express ourselves shapes the community around us.
