We use cups and mugs to drink from but a mug is bigger and taller than a cup. Sometimes a cup will have a small plate underneath called a saucer. - Would you like a cup of tea or coffee? - I had a mug of hot chocolate before bed. - I gave the cat a saucer of milk

To cook in an over, without using any liquid or fat. - I'll bake a potato in the oven.

To cook a pan using a fat like oil or butter. - He's frying the donuts in oil.

To cook it something on a flat metal frame with bars across it above or below strong direct heat. - Dad grilled the vegetables on the barbecue.

Mash

To crush food that has been cooked until soft and smooth. - Mash the carrots until they are smooth.

Melt

To turn from something hard into something soft or liquid. - Melt the butter in the pan.

Roast

To cook food in an oven using some fat like oil or butter. - We roasted the tomatoes with some olive oil and herbs.

Bitter/sour

Both mean the opposite of sweet to describe things with a strong sharp taste. We use bitter for things like coffee and dark chocolate and sour for acidic things e.g. citrus fruit like lemons and oranges. - Coffee is bitter without sugar. - Lemon is sour.

Bland/tasty

Food that is bland has very little taste, and is the opposite of tasty. - If the sauce is bland, add some more chilli and salt. - Mmmm, this curry is really tasty.

Delicious/disgusting

We use delicious to describe food we think tastes really nice and disgusting for food we think tastes very bad. - The cake was so delicious I had two slices. - The fish was so disgusting that I had to spit it out.

Dry

When something does not have enough water or liquid. - I left the cake in the oven too long, so it was really dry.

Greasy

Full of oil. - I find fried food too greasy.

Raw/Undercooked

Raw means not cooked at all, and undercooked means not cooked enough. - The chicken was undercooked; inside it was pink and raw.

Salty

Something that tastes like salt or contains a lot of salt. The dinner was too salty, so I was thirsty all night.

Spicy

Food that has strong, hot flavors like chilli or curry. - Mexican food is nice and spicy.

Food that tastes like sugar, opposite of sour and bitter. - I like really sweet tea with lots of sugar.
