Storing R290

Storage of Products containing R290

  • Work/ storage areas containing any quantity of R290 must be clearly marked and display safety warning signs (which apply)
  • Emergency procedures in the event of a leak/ fire
  • Awareness of products/ materials stored
  • Fire fighting equipment (including multiple suitably rated fire extinguishers must be located close to areas containing R290)
  • An in-depth risk assessment should be carried out to ensure compliance with applicable laws

  • Fire officers should be appointed must develop a plan for detecting and responding to gas leaks, including evacuation procedures and the use of personal protective equipment
  • It is the responsibility of the company storing products containing R290 to ensure that they meet statutory requirements for storing such materials in compliance with Irish legislation (Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005)
  • All staff working in close proximity to R290 Units must wear personal leak detection alarm
  • All areas used to store R290 should be properly ventilated, any fans (if required) should be suitably rated.

Storage of Products containing R290 (requirement by total volume)

  • Ventilation: Ensure proper ventilation in storage areas to prevent the build-up of gas in case of leaks.
  • R290 is a pure gas and has no smell. There is added odorant THT, which gives it a smell similar to city gas. (THT:Tetrahydrothiophene).
  • Fire Safety: Maintain a safe distance from ignition sources and equip the area with appropriate fire extinguishers (e.g., dry powder or CO₂ extinguishers suitable for flammable gases).
  • Labelling: Containers should be clearly labelled as containing flammable gas.
  • Storage: Containers should be stored upright and secured to prevent them from falling.

Storage of Products containing R290 (requirement by total volume)

  • Storage Area: A dedicated, well-ventilated storage area is required, separate from other operational zones. Outdoor storage is preferable, but if stored indoors, it should be in a gas storage cage or a well-ventilated room.
  • Fire Separation: Ensure that the storage area is at least 3 meters away from ignition sources, electrical installations, and flammable materials.
  • Temperature Control: Store at stable temperatures to avoid pressure fluctuations in cylinders. Keep containers out of direct sunlight or heat sources.
  • Signage: Appropriate warning signage should be displayed, indicating the presence of flammable gas.
  • Security: Storage areas should be locked to prevent unauthorized access, and safety protocols should be followed during handling.

Storage of Products containing R290 (requirement by total volume)

  • Specialized Storage Facility: For larger quantities, R290 must be stored in specialized gas storage facilities designed for flammable gases.
  • Distance from Buildings: In large-scale storage, the facility should be located at a safe distance from buildings, typically 5 to 10 meters or more, depending on the quantity stored, as specified by local regulations and fire safety standards.
  • Firefighting Equipment: Storage areas should be equipped with more advanced firefighting equipment, such as automatic fire suppression systems, in addition to fire extinguishers.
  • Gas Detection Systems: Installing gas detectors in the storage area to monitor potential leaks is often mandatory for large-scale storage.
  • Regulatory Notification: Storing more than 50 kg of flammable gas may require notification to local authorities, such as the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) and may trigger more stringent inspection and safety planning obligations.

In All Cases, please follow applicable local legislation

Identifying Air Conditioning units containing

  • Units have an R290 label
  • Units are clearly identified with RZ in their Model Code
  • All units contain an R290 Warning label and unit refrigerant volume
