Poetry Spotlight
Grade 5 has been working hard in our current poetry unit, exploring the many ways writers use language to create meaning and emotion. As part of our unit, students have been learning to identify poetic structures, experiment with figurative language such as similes and metaphors, analyze rhythm and rhyme, and study how poets use imagery and word choice to shape tone and mood. They have also been drafting their own original poems using a variety of forms and techniques. One of the most exciting ways students have been sharing their work is through the Poetry Open Mic open to 4th and 5th graders in the library during recess. Students can sign up to read their poems aloud, support their peers, or simply enjoy listening to the creativity of others. This is a fantastic space for expression, confidence-building, and celebration of student voice. Here are several examples of poems from across the grade, each showcasing a unique style and inspiration drawn from the poets and pieces we’ve explored together.

Year 6 History – The Ancient Maya
This term, Year 6 explored the Ancient Mayan civilisation through a series of student-led lessons, confidently leading learning experiences for their classmates. The children investigated Mayan daily life, religion, architecture, achievements, writing and calendars, creating interactive tasks, quizzes, discussions and creative challenges that brought this ancient civilisation vividly to life. By leading lessons themselves, pupils demonstrated deep understanding, strong communication skills and impressive teamwork. They asked thoughtful questions, encouraged participation and adapted activities in response to their audience—skills that extend well beyond the history curriculum. It was inspiring to see Year 6 approach this learning with such enthusiasm and maturity, transforming the classroom into a lively hub of curiosity and collaboration while celebrating the rich legacy of the Ancient Maya.

Year 6 Science – Electricity and Circuits
This term, Year 6 has been buzzing with excitement as they explored the fascinating world of electricity and circuits. Pupils investigated how electrical circuits work, learning to identify and use key components such as cells, wires, bulbs, switches and buzzers. Through hands-on investigations, they discovered how changing the number of cells or components affects brightness, volume and performance, and used scientific symbols to draw and interpret circuit diagrams like real engineers. Our young scientists developed their enquiry skills by planning fair tests, making predictions, recording results and explaining their findings using accurate scientific vocabulary. They also learned how electricity is used safely in everyday life, linking their learning to real-world applications. Their curiosity was truly switched on, with teamwork and problem-solving energising every lesson.

Wonders of Watery Planet
Grade 5 students concluded their Watery Planet unit with an engaging Science Celebration that highlighted their curiosity and scientific thinking. Students explored the essential role of water on Earth—investigating the distribution of fresh and salt water, studying the water cycle, and examining how the earth’s systems work together. Through hands-on experiments and models, they observed key processes such as evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and collection. Students also learned how access to reliable water sources affects communities and how natural hazards like floods and droughts influence lives around the world. They designed thoughtful solutions aimed at reducing the impacts of these hazards. The celebration provided a meaningful opportunity for students to share their understanding, communicate their ideas, and showcase the hard work they put into this unit. We are proud of their enthusiasm and growth as young scientists.

MathQuest: The Search for Solutions
Grade 5 students had an exciting mathematical adventure ‘MathQuest: The Search for Solutions.’ After completing the first two Eureka Math modules, students celebrated their learning through hands-on challenges, collaborative problem-solving, and engaging activities designed to reinforce place value understanding, decimal concepts, and multi-step operations. Throughout the day, students rotated through themed stations where they analyzed problems, applied strategies with confidence, and showcased their growing mathematical thinking.

Explored Early Americas Through Codex Project and Expert Panel
Grade 5 recently concluded Unit 2, Early Americas: Aztec, Maya, and Inca Civilizations, with an engaging and interactive celebration of learning. Students participated in the Codex Project, where they created illustrated codices, bringing to life the stories, traditions, and achievements of these remarkable civilizations. The celebration continued with an Expert Panel, where some students assumed the role of historians, sharing their knowledge about the Aztec, Maya, and Inca civilizations, while their peers asked thoughtful questions to learn more. The Codex Project and Expert Panel not only highlighted students’ creativity and research skills but also fostered collaboration and curiosity, reflecting our commitment to inspiring innovation and compassionate action in learning.

Grade 5 students approached an engineering challenge by designing and constructing the tallest tower possible using spaghetti and marshmallows. They applied engineering techniques by planning their designs, testing structures, and making adjustments to improve stability and height. This hands-on challenge encouraged creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving.

Math with Manipulatives
Grade 5 students explored decimal place value and operations through hands-on learning with a variety of math manipulatives. They used base-ten blocks to build their understanding of decimal place value and to model multiplying decimals by whole numbers and by other decimal numbers. They also played Decimal Pickle, a fun card game for comparing and ordering decimals. In addition, students used counters and Unifix cubes to solve other open-ended problems, helping them think flexibly and apply concepts in meaningful ways.

Learning really is great fun in Year 6 at SVS!
Our current class novel: Great Expectations by Charles Dickens has given us so many avenues to explore and lots of fantastic opportunities to talk and to write. We investigated the historical context and supported our reading of the text by watching snippets of one of the films which really brought the story to life. We also did some research into the author's life and gave presentations to the class to demonstrate our learning. Here are our comments on this fantastic story: - Maryam - This classic story is thrilling because it has lots of detail, realistic scenes and characters. My favourite character so far is the scary escaped convict. I can’t wait to find out what happens!
