Math and Literacy Units

As 4th graders neared the end of their math and literacy units, they worked collaboratively to synthesize both subjects in the form of a poster. In math, they had been solving multi-step word problems by drawing comparative tape diagrams, using standard algorithms for addition and subtraction, and writing their final answer in a statement. This time they had to work backwards. First, they chose a comparative tape diagram. Then they chose some key elements from our literacy lessons on the Middle Ages in Europe to create a multi-step word problem that would match their chosen tape diagram. After solving their own word problem and writing their final answer in a statement, they added a bit of artwork. Students thoroughly enjoyed showcasing their creativity and solidifying their knowledge of both subjects simultaneously.

Year 5 Blue News

Year 5 Blue has had a brilliant start to the school year! One of our weekly highlights is visiting our Rainbows buddies. Each week, we spend time playing, reading stories and exploring their classroom together. Our buddies are only 3 and 4 years old and we love seeing the world through their eyes—their curiosity helps us learn just as much as we help them. We also enjoyed creating and performing our class assembly, where we shared everything we’ve been learning so far. From exploring the Solar System and discovering the world of Ancient Greece to practising persuasive writing and strengthening our number sense, we’ve been busy! Of course, no week in Year 5 Blue is complete without a dance break to one of DJ Raphi’s energetic songs. It’s a fun way to stay active and keep our spirits high. We’re excited for all the learning and adventures still to come this year!

Year 5 Yellow - Van De Graaff Investigation

In 5 Yellow, we had an electrifying time exploring static electricity with our Van de Graaff generator! As we investigated how the moving belt carries charge from the base of the machine to the shiny metal sphere, we began to understand how static electricity builds up and suddenly discharges in a spark. One of our favourite moments was watching the hairs on a wig shot straight up in the air and when we spotted (and definitely heard!) spooky little sparks as we held the metal wand close to the sphere. It helped us see for ourselves that like charges repel, they push away from each other as far as they can, which is why everything seems to jump, pop and crackle! We also discovered that the Van de Graaff generator creates static electricity through friction. This links perfectly with our current science topic on “Forces”, where we’ve been learning how friction slows, stops and powers different types of movement. Our classroom definitely felt like a mini science lab!

Small Steps, Sweet Victories!

Grade 4 students proudly wrapped up their Narrative Writing Unit by exploring first-person stories and crafting their own original narratives. To celebrate their hard work, we hosted a Candy Land–themed experience inspired by Small Steps: The Year I Got Polio. Grade 3 students were invited as special guests to listen to the stories and enjoy a symbolic chocolate milk treat, reflecting a key moment from our anchor text. Survival Showcase: Young Zoologists at Work! In Science, students investigated how animal and plant adaptations support survival. Acting as Junior Zoologists, they created 3D clay models and brochures showcasing internal and external structures. Their creativity and scientific accuracy were truly impressive! Math Masters: Tackling Multistep Problems! To celebrate their progress in Math, students designed their own multistep word problems and solved problems created by their classmates. Working collaboratively, they demonstrated perseverance, logical thinking, and pride in their growing mathematical skills.

Jaguars Take Flight: A STEAM Adventure in Aerospace!

Jubail Fourth Grade Jaguars had an exciting opportunity to apply their STEAM skills in a hands-on learning experience. Our students welcomed British Aerospace, who guided them through an engaging exploration of flight and engineering. Students investigated how to design and build a model airplane, using the engineering process to test, revise, and improve their creations. Each table group experimented with different wing shapes and materials, then compared flight distances to determine which design performed best. Through this inquiry, students discovered how small design changes can significantly impact performance. We also learned about the purpose of creating prototypes in the aerospace industry and why engineers test multiple models before building an actual aircraft. After exploring airplanes, students extended their learning by designing and testing simple helicopters.

Students Shared...

Violette (4A) shared, “I learned so many things I didn’t know. I think creating our model paper airplane, the hicopter, was a great idea.” Maaz (4A) reflected, “I liked in the activity that we learned a lot, like the more pins you add in the airplane, the faster it rotates.” Mochi (4B) added, “Something I liked about our STEAM lesson is that I learned about airplanes and how they take off.” Julyannah (4B) shared, “I really liked the straw airplane activity because its structure was different. If you throw it softly, it flies well, but if you throw it too hard, the results change.” It was a wonderful day of inquiry, collaboration, and hands-on learning as our Jaguars embraced the engineering mindset and truly took flight!

Exploring the Hidden World of Materials in Year 5

Over the last weeks, Year 5 students have been busy investigating the fascinating properties of materials as part of our science learning. We began by testing a range of materials for key properties such as magnetism, transparency and hardness. Using simple equipment, the children worked like real scientists by recording observations, comparing results, and discussing differences between materials. Next, we explored electrical conductivity, investigating which materials allow electricity to pass through and which act as insulators. Using micro:bits, pupils applied their computing skills to a real scientific problem, testing materials to see if they could trigger a light pattern and sound when electricity was conducted. Our next investigation will focus on insulating heat. The children will plan their own experiment, identifying variables, choosing fair-testing methods, and predicting which materials will keep a container of warm water hot for the longest time. To finish the unit, we will explore the uses of everyday materials, including plastics, wood and metal, and discuss why certain objects are made from particular materials based on their properties. By the end of this unit, Year 5 students will have strengthened their scientific enquiry skills, worked collaboratively, and developed a deeper understanding of the materials that make up the world around us.
