Questions to ask yourself about the form
Questions to ask yourself about the content
Did I start from the original statement; did I keep the same wording? Does my turnaround fall into one of these categories? - 'to the self': where I put myself in the place of the person I was judging - 'to the other': where I reverse the roles of the original statement - 'to the opposite': where I find the polar opposite of the original statement Did I turn around only one part of the sentence at a time, or did I turn around two or more? Did I accidentally turn around a turnaround?
Could this turnaround be serving to justify my attitude, words, or actions at the expense of the other person? Is this turnaround based on assumptions about the other? Does this turnaround attack or accuse the other? Does it justify my anger or disappointment? Does this turnaround have nothing to do with me (to the self or from me to the other) and only deals with the other? Does this turnaround lead me to insights that help me know myself better or see the world with more kindness?
Remember that the purpose of the turnarounds is to correct your mistaken beliefs—to show yourself, step by step, that the opposite of what you believed, sometimes for decades, is just as true, if not truer, than your original conviction.
