The Perfect Plate

Cook up the ideal meal for each animal featured in the film!

Start

You are what you eat!

Before you start cooking, it's important to know what's inside the food you're serving. A nutrition label is added to packaged foods to help people understand its nutritional content—for example, how much protein or fat it contains. This example label shows the nutritional content of one slice of whole-wheat bread. Click each arrow to learn a little more about each nutrient!

What about animals?

Every animal has specific nutritional needs that are different from a human's. Some animals get everything they need from only a few food sources, while humans need a diet with a lot of variety! As you cook the favorite meal of each animal, click on the nutrition label to see which nutrients each dish contains.

Bamboo Salad

A fiber-ful feast!

Bamboo makes up 99% of a giant panda's diet! Their large, flat molars help them grind up these tough plants, and they can use their pseudo-thumbs to grasp the stems while they chew.

Pandas need to eat a lot of bamboo to get enough nutrients—on average, they eat 50 pounds a day. That means they're spending around 12 hours a day just eating! Get ready to eat as much bamboo as you can before the day is up...

Leopard's Lucky Day

Goat Tartare

Served raw

A snow leopard's favorite meal is an ungulate, a large hooved mammal. Wild goats and sheep make up most of a snow leopard's diet, and one catch will feed a leopard for over a week. Garnish with pika if you're feeling fancy!

Carnivores vs. Herbivores

Learn more

You've learned a little about the snow leopard, a carnivore, and its prey, which are herbivores. Can you sort the characteristics below into either category?

Sweets For a Snow Fairy

Maple Sap-Sicles

A sugary delight!

Long-tailed tits mostly eat insects and spiders. However, these food sources are hard to find in the winter, so these "snow fairies" rely on frozen sap-cicles as an essential source of energy.

A Meal for Mudskippers

Tidal Trail Mix

Lightly salted

Mudskippers are oportunistic feeders—that means they'll eat whatever they can find, including worms, insects, crabs, snails, shrimp, fish, and fish eggs. Some species also eat algae.

Mudskippers eat small fish and a variety of invertebrates. Here are just a few examples! Which group does each animal belong to?

Jerboas never need to drink standing water—they get all the water they need from the insects they eat!

Jerboas eat moths too! How do moths and butterflies differ?

Mudskippers breed, forage, and hunt on land at low tide. During high tide, they stay in their underground burrows.

You're almost there!

Some concepts are not in the correct drawer…but you're very close! Remembering which techniques help and which don't is part of learning, so making mistakes also counts as progress. Try again!

The colder it is, the more energy these small birds need—and the snowy forests of Hokkaido, Japan can reach temperatures as low as -22° F!

Carnivores have shorter intestines because its easier and faster to digest meat and absorb its nutrients. Their stomach has only one chamber and is extremely acidic to kill any bacteria or viruses living in rotting meat.

Carnivore Digestion

Herbivores have longer intestines because digesting plants is a slower and more difficult process. Some herbivores, likes cows, sheep, and goats, have a four-chambered stomach where they partially digest food before regurgitating and swallowing it again.

World of Worms

There are over 25,000 known species of roundworms, also called nematodes. They are an important food source for many mudskippers.

Roundworms

Mudskippers love polychaetes, a type of segmented worm with bristles that lives in salt water. Earthworms and leeches are also segmented worms!

Segmented Worms

Like other types of worms, flatworms can be found in all kinds of habitats, and are also probably eaten by mudskippers.

Flatworms

You ate more than 50 pounds of bamboo!

That might not sound like a very interesting diet, but pandas eat over 60 different species of bamboo.

Golden eagles, lynxes, brown bears, and wolves also prey upon these ibexes.

Asiatic ibex

Like other ungulates in the region, their hooves are adapted to grip smooth and rocky terrain, making them excellent climbers.

Himalayan tahr

Their bluish-gray coloring helps them camouflage against the backdrop of their rocky mountain habitat.

Bharal

This is the world's largest sheep! Males fight with their horns to determine dominance.

Parts of the Plant

During the hardest season to forage food—winter—pandas rely on the bamboo stems.

Stems

Bamboo sends up shoots (young plants) in the spring— pandas love them because they have a lot of protein!

Shoots

In the summer and fall, once the shoots have grown, pandas switch to eating bamboo leaves.

Leaves

What is sap?

All plants have sap! Plants absorb sunlight through their leaves and convert this energy into sugar. Sap, which is mostly water, moves this sugar and other nutrients either up from the roots or down from the leaves to the other parts of the plant.

Pandas have a carnivore's digestive system, which makes it hard for them to digest plants.
