How is a shop bought apple pie different?
After being made in a factory the apple pies have to travel to all the different shops around the country and are displayed on shelves for people to come and buy. A homemade pie would have gone rotten by the time it had got to the shop. To stop the rot the apple pies have other ingredients such as additives and preservatives added to them. It is okay to eat these ingredients sometimes but not everyday. You can find additives and preservatives in the ingredients list on a packet of food. They often begin with an E and have numbers after the E.
Why do we use additives and preservatives? Processing food and adding ingredients to make food last longer keeps the food looking good and tasting delicious but reduces how nutritious it is so only eat these foods sometimes.
We call this way of processing ultra-processed food.
