The Induction Process

This resource uses the water cycle as a metaphor to support the understanding of the induction journey. Each stage of the metaphor is named for a state of water in the cycle, e.g., evaporation, condensation, and precipitation that mark transformation. Like water, a kaiako's journey is part of a greater whole, constantly flowing, transforming, and returning to its source.

STAGE 5: TE HŌPUA WAI

Te Hōpua Wai is where induction shifts into ongoing professional learning. It’s not the end — it’s a continuation of the cycle, now powered by strong relationships, shared purpose, and clarity of contribution.

STAGE 2: TE PATA WAI

At this stage, kaimahi are settling in, reflecting more critically on their practice, and exploring how their values, experiences, and cultural knowledge align with and enrich the kura’s kaupapa, culture, and teaching approaches. The emphasis is on building confidence, strengthening relationships with peers, ākonga, whānau, and iwi, and integrating more fully into the professional and social fabric of the kura.
