Situación e importancia de las presas en Gran Canaria

Según los datos publicados en el Plan Hidrológico de la Demarcación Hidrográfica, en sus 1.560 km² de extención la isla de Gran Canaria cuenta con 172 presas, de las cuales 70 tienen la consideración de grandes presas, convirtiéndolo en uno de los lugares delmundo con mayor densidad de grandes presas. Estas presas se usan en la actualidad para dos usos principalmente:

Embalsar las aguas de lluvia. Aprovechar el agua en Gran Canaria, a lo largo de la historia, ha constituido para los grancanarios una tarea constante de supervivencia.

El almacenamiento tan necesario para las energías renovables no gestionables, es decir, la no aprovechable, siendo un diseño innovador para el desarrollo de las energías renovables de Gran Canaria que ya no sufrirá la dependencia energética de fuentes fósiles y del exterior.
