What is Camouflage?

Camouflage is how organisms disguise themselves to blend in with their environment. It can be used to hide from predators or to stalk prey.

Camouflage is specific to each organism, and might not work in different environments.

Camouflage doesn't fool everyone!

Not all eyes are the same! Things that look red to us might look green to certain animals.

Why do we see in color?

Specialized cells called cones and rods are imbedded in the back inner wall of an eyeball, called the retina. Rods allow us to see light and shadow. Cones are for color only. Humans have three different kinds of cones, which allow us to see red, blue and green. Other animals like dogs, cats, and deer only have two cones-- green and blue.

Camouflage is expressed differently by every animal that uses it. Some animals might use multiple camouflage methods at once, while others have color-changing skin to become true masters of disguise. Are there any other kinds of camouflage you can think of?

Aposematism

  • Aposematism is not camouflage, it's actually the opposite.
