Light, Sound and Communication

Finally, we familiarized ourselves with how light can help us “communicate” messages (like how the colors of a stoplight communicate messages for traffic). We were able to utilize the Black Box room in ASD to have students practice communicating messages that they had developed to a partner through only different colored lights.

In Grade 1 Blue, we have recently finished our “Light, Sound, and Communication” Science unit. During this unit, students explored a variety of topics, including how sounds are made using the vibrations of objects. While exploring this topic, we used different classroom materials and “vibrated” them to create different sounds. We also investigated the difference between opaque, transparent, and translucent materials and created our own stained glass using tissue paper and plastic bags.

Plant Exploration in Year 2

In Year 2, children became curious plant detectives as they explored the growing BSD garden and the plants around our community. They closely examined leaves, stems, flowers, and roots, noticing the colours, textures and shapes that make each plant unique. Through interactive, hands-on learning, they discovered how each plant part has a special job, from roots absorbing water to the stem supporting a plant to stay upright. The children discovered what plants need to grow and asked thoughtful questions, such as what might happen if a plant doesn’t get light, and do all plants need soil to grow?

By observing real plants, investigating scientific questions, and engaging their senses outdoors, our young learners have developed a deeper understanding of plant features and how they help plants survive and thrive. This learning has also encouraged them to appreciate their role in caring for nature, recognising they are part of something far greater and that every small action can help protect our environment.

Celebrating our Amazing Bodies

They completed a food pyramid and used Think-Pair-Share to remind each other about choosing healthy foods, limiting junk food, and building colorful, balanced meal plates. To wrap up their learning, students honored two scientific heroes Dr. Edward Jenner and Louis Pasteur, whose discoveries continue to protect our health today. What a joyful way to celebrate growing minds and healthy bodies!

Grade 1 students proudly shared their knowledge of five key body systems: skeletal, digestive, circulatory, nervous, and muscular, explaining how each helps us move, grow, and stay strong. They also reflected on the five keys to staying healthy: eating nutritious food, drinking water, exercising, getting enough sleep, keeping clean, and visiting the doctor for regular checkups. As part of their learning, students sorted food pictures into the six food groups: rice and bread; fruits; vegetables; milk and its products; meat, fish, and eggs; and oils, fats, and sweets.

Grade 1 Math: Exploring Number Sense Through Teen Number Representation

This dynamic exercise not only fostered creativity and choice but also provided concrete evidence of their grasp of place value and number sense. The event was a vibrant success, putting the spotlight on each student's confident and diverse math voices.

Students participated in an empowering, choice-based activity to deepen their understanding of teen numbers. Each young mathematician selected a number and was tasked with representing it using four distinct and foundational methods: number sentences, number bonds, ten-frame visualization, and number name writing.

ISG DamMam Student Quotes

Jackobus: I felt happy as my friends helped me during the activity. I learned that fish, meat and eggs have high protein in it.

Sultan: The skeletal system was good and fun to learn.

Bader: When doing the food pyramid, I enjoyed cutting out the different food objects.

Alma: I liked learning about germs and that some germs are good and they help us. Also I learned about boiling water to kill germs.

Adam: I now know all the 5 keys to health. We need to keep our bodies healthy and strong.

Scientific Wonders

Our Grade 1 scientists and engineers have been busy exploring the fascinating world of earthquakes! As part of their “I Am a Scientist” unit, students investigated how natural disasters affect the land and communities, and then took on the challenge of designing paper structures that could withstand a simulated earthquake. Working in teams, the young engineers brainstormed ideas, planned their designs, constructed, tested, and improved their creations all while practicing the collaborative learning attribute they are focusing on this month.

Throughout the process, students shared ideas, listened to their teammates, made decisions together, and reflected on what worked well and what they could improve next time. This hands-on project allowed students to showcase their creativity, problem-solving and teamwork skills. Inspired by their collaborative success, Grade 1 is now preparing to lead part of this month’s Primary Assembly on Collaboration!

Remembrance Day 2025

We took our learning outside the classroom last week and walked up to Jubilee Park on Sara Compound. There, we saw the silhouettes of soldiers who had fought for their countries in the World Wars last century. Mrs Bell told stories about who the soldiers were, their names and ages and who they left behind when they left their families to fight. Some of these brave men sadly didn’t come home while others made it back but with injuries. Each child then chose a soldier and invented their back story: gave them a name, a family and a history. This helped bring these heroes to life for the pupils.

Once back in class, the children wrote their soldier’s story - what they had been through in the war, how they felt and if they made it home to their loved ones. These lessons gave our Year 2 pupils the chance to put themselves in another’s shoes and write from a different perspective while gaining insight into what these heroes went through which gives us the life we now lead today.
