What is integration?

What types of integration residency are there?

There are five types of integration residency:

This residence permit is awarded in exceptional circumstances. Foreign nationals who are already in Spain and have ties to the country may apply for it.These ties may be family, social, work, educational or economic.

1. Second chance residency 2. Social and employment residency 3. Social integration residency 4. Social and educational residency 5. Family tie residency

Residence permits are generally granted for one year, with a possible extension.

For family tie residency, permits are granted for up to 5 years.

What are the general requirements?

For any type of residence permit, you must:

• Be in Spain at the time of application.

• Not have applied for asylum or not apply for it while integration residency is being processed.

• Have lived in Spain for at least two years (except for family tie residency).

• Have had no criminal record in the last 5 years.

• Have no expulsion order or entry ban.

• Not pose a threat to public safety.

• Pay the corresponding administrative fee.

Note that if you have applied for asylum, the time spent as an applicant for asylum does not count when applying for integration residency.

What are the specific requirements for each type?

Social and educational residency

Second chance residency

You are enrolled in official training or on a course offered by the Public Employment Service.

You had a previous residence permit that was not renewed (for reasons other than security, health or public order).

Family tie residency

Social and employment residency

This is applicable to:

You must provide evidence of one or more employment contract/s for at least 20 hours per week, with a salary equal to or higher than the minimum wage.

• the parent or guardian of a minor who is a citizen of the European Union.

• a family member who lives with and provides support for a person with a disability who is a citizen of the European Union.

Social integration residency

You have family members who are legally resident in Spain or can demonstrate integration through:

• a favourable report from social services • sufficient financial means

What if my asylum application has been rejected?

Please note

Applying for integration residency can be key to regularising your status in Spain and to accessing healthcare.

From 20 May 2025, people who have been issued with a final rejection of their asylum application will be able to apply for permanent residency, without having to meet the two-year residence requirement in Spain, if:

Talk to a lawyer or a migrant support service for advice on your case.

• The final rejection ruling was issued before 20 May 2025.

• They had irregular status for at least 6 months before applying for integration residency.

• They meet the general and specific requirements for the respective type of integration residency.
