WORLD ISLANDS DAY
CONTEXT
Climate change is a reality. In one way or another, it is affecting the entire planet. But of all the world's ecosystems, islands are experiencing its effects most rapidly and dramatically. Changes are taking place in natural spaces and economic activities. This, coupled on many islands with excessive human pressure and the resulting overexploitation of resources, makes it more necessary than ever to find a balance between sustainable and economic development. In the 2024-2025 academic year, IES Bendinat (Balearic Islands, Spain), Escola Básica e Secundaria Santa María (Azores, Portugal), and College La Montagne (Réunion, France) carried out the Let's Save The Islands Project through an eTwinning initiative.
ORIGINAL PROJECT:Let's Save The Islands!
Let's Save The Islands aimed to learn more about the natural and cultural heritage of each of our islands and share it with others. We also wanted to understand what individuals, businesses, and institutions were doing to mitigate the effects of climate change. Our conclusion is that most people are aware of the change, but are not acting accordingly, leading us to believe that much work remains to be done. The project's ultimate goal was to have the UN declare an International Day of the World Islands, so that islands can be protected worldwide.

AND NOW, WHERE DO WE STAND?
ACADEMIC YEAR 2025-2026 THE MAIN OBJECTIVE THE DECLARATION OF THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF ISLANDS
ACADEMIC YEAR 2025-2026. THE ACTIVITIES.
For the 2025-2026 school year, having completed the necessary bureaucratic procedures, we plan to share both the original project and this new version so that it can be implemented in other schools, either in its entirety or adapted to their specific circumstances, to achieve our objective. The idea is to explore different themes related to the islands throughout the school year, culminating in an exhibition of all the work done around May 19th, International Islands Day. Each school/association will proceed at its own pace, according to its own schedule and interests, but within the framework of the following questions:
What makes us unique?
What do we have in common?
ACADEMIC YEAR 2025-2026 REQUEST
We submit this request to the UN General Assembly or its specific department to have May 19th OFFICIALLY DECLARED INTERNATIONAL ISLAND DAY.
INTERNATIONAL ISLAND DAY? Let's remember why.
The United Nations and various international organizations celebrate international days on many topics. But none of them specifically address islands. That's why we advocate for the celebration of International Islands Day, for several reasons: to raise awareness, to give greater emphasis to their protection and conservation, and to educate society about their environmental, economic, and social importance. This is especially crucial now that climate change is having a more rapid impact on these territories.
