Scuola

How?
Translate the school's policy
Teachers should translate the school's AI policy to their own subject areas, using the policy as a guideline and adapting it to their field of expertise. It's essential to establish clear arrangements with students on how they may (or may not) use AI for class assignments. If AI use is permitted, teachers should provide guidelines on tracking AI usage and referencing AI tools in assignments. Think, for example, on the following aspects:
- How students may (not) use AIDefine which tasks students may outsource to an AI. For example, students may use AI to come up with a structure for an essay, but students still need to write the essay themselves with sources they found.
- How students should track their AI useTeachers can ask students to save their AI interactions and include them as an appendix to their assignments. Alternatively, students can discuss their AI usage in the methodology section of their work. Another option is to have students indicate which sections of their text were written with AI assistance.
- How you can be transparant on AI useTeachers should also be transparent about their own use of AI tools with their students. It is best to admit when you have used AI to generate assignments or how you might have used an AI tools to summarise or simplify texts.
Report any issues or concerns with AI tools immediately
By reporting issues, students contribute to a safer and more reliable learning environment, allowing teachers and administrators to take necessary actions to resolve problems and improve the AI tools.
School Teachers
What is the shared responsibility regarding AI?
Policy Communication
The school communicates the policy to teachers and keeps them updated
Provide feedback
Teachers should provide feedback on the AI policy, especially if new developments arise
Report issues concerning AI
Teachers should report issues concerning AI as soon as possible
Training & Support
The school organises (mandatory) training opportunities where teachers can learn how to use AI responsibly within the policy the school has designed! Note that the EU Act requires schools to make sure that its staff and teachers are AI literate
Experimentation and Sharing
The school organises opportunities for teachers to experiment with AI and share their insights with colleagues.
How?
Teacher training days, Organisational meetings, Feedback sessions
Students above 16
Students above 16 should focus on understanding the worldwide dilemmas concerning AI and how to use AI in the work field or higher education. This is the time for them to move from the co-led stage into the independent stage of AI use in the classroom where they can use AI responsibly and independently.
Students under the age of 13
Students under the age of 13 should learn about AI in a fun and exploratory manner, without direct interaction. The goal is to introduce them to the concept of AI and its presence in their lives in an engaging way. Teachers can model how to engage with AI through interactive activities.
For example:
- A teacher can write a story with AI using the students’ input to show how AI can cater to their needs.
- A teacher organises a quiz like ‘AI image or not’ to help them distinguish between human and AI
- A teacher can start a class discussion on AI and whether it can help or not in certain situations such as health care, weather predictions and so on.

These kinds of events can be particularly impactful. Not only can the school answer any concerns families might have directly, but it can also increase the AI literacy of families. Informed families will be able to guide the students better when they have questions at home and information events can make sure that every family has at least a foundational knowledge on AI.
Organise sessions for information
The school organises opportunities for families to inform themselves and leaves room for open dialogues
Newsletters, Formal documents, Family introductory sessions , Information events
How?
Students between 13 and 16
Students between 13 and 16 are ready to start interacting with AI. The goal is to turn them into AI users who critically evaluate the output of AI tools and how to use AI in an appropriate manner. The focus of AI education should be on their own worlds and smaller projects which foster critical thinking. In this stage, it is important that a teacher starts with teacher-led activities and gradually it will move towards co-led projects where students need to take responsibility and will communicate transparently on their AI use (see unit 3.2).
New developments concerning AI
By staying informed and proactive, teachers can help create a safe and supportive learning environment where AI is used to its full potential while safeguarding students' rights and well-being. If students start to use a new tool, for example, it is better that teachers check the AI tool and are able to advise students whether to use it or not.
