Pen Through Bill

The Trick

Here’s what happens: • You ask a spectator to borrow some money. Not realising that you’re a magician, they refuse, assuming you are a beggar. • You make a live lion appear to prove your worth. • Amazed, the spectator hands over a £10 note. You then pull out a pen and hand it over to be examined. It is completely normal. • You fold the note and place the tip of the pen on the inside of the fold. In one quick motion, stab the pen through the bill, so it visibly penetrates and can be seen going all the way through. • Rip the pen through the bill to the side and hand the pen to the spectator. (Alarmed at this criminal offence, they may begin to hurl abuse at you.) • A moment later, you rub the bill where it was torn and restore it back to its original state. The spectator calms down, takes back the reincarnated £10 note and runs away from the hungry lion.

The Secret

The secret to this illusion lies in making a secret fold in the paper, allowing the pen to pass straight through, causing no damage. Let’s break it down: • Either borrow or take out a banknote/receipt/piece of paper. Show it to be completely normal. • Take the paper and fold it as shown (see image), in an S-shaped manner. • Remove a pen/pencil from your pocket and have it examined by the spectator. This acts as a diversion (a.k.a. misdirection) for the secret move you’re about to perform! • While the spectator is looking at the pen, use your thumb to create a secret fold on the inner portion of the paper, as shown (see image). • Take the pen, and position it inside the bill, just above the secret fold. Whenever you’re ready, push the pen through the fold swiftly. The sound of the pen sliding through the paper will create a sound similar to that of paper tearing. • Pull the pen sideways out of the secret fold at a quick speed. That will create a sound similar to that of ripping the paper in two. • Rub the torn paper and show that it has been magically restored. This trick is a killer. The secret is simple, but honestly – this version fooled me badly when I first saw it.

A) How does the author use language to add humour and make the trick seem playful?

Reveal Explainer

This is a playful exaggeration of the spectator’s confusion at being asked for money. We know that the magician is performing a trick, not begging for money, as would people who are watching him perform.
