Bergamot

QUESTION 1 / 3

The right answer is: Italy

Bergamot is a Citrus fruit with a green-yellow rind that takes its origins in Southern Italy, in the Calabrian region.

Thanks to the region’s unique microclimate, mineral-rich soil, and salty sea breezes, Calabria produces the world’s finest bergamot, prized for its complex, floral aroma. For centuries, local growers have cultivated this “green gold” by hand, making Calabria not only the global heart of bergamot production but also a living symbol of craft, tradition, and natural excellence. 90-95% of bergamot worldwide production comes form Calabria.

Pelatrice

Pelatrice

The oil is confined in small “bags” within the peel. The zest of the fruit is grated under running water to help bring out the essence which is then separated from water by centrifugation.

Sfuma Torchio

The pulp of the fruit contains odorants that completes the experience of fresh fruit. Only extracting the oil from the peel, the entire fruit is used.

Bergamot lends a radiant, tangy citrus facet to the fragrance. It has an extremely rich, sweet and fruity initial odor, followed by a characteristic herbaceous and balsamic body and dry out. Bergamot smells like sunlight. Its unique aroma makes it both:

  • Uplifting and soothing
  • Energizing yet calming

Adds freshness, sparkle, and a green and floral twist

A sparkling duo of 2 finest qualities of bergamots (pelatrice x sfuma Torchio) for a more faceted and longer lasting note. Instead of only extracting the oil from the peel (pelatrice), the entire fruit is used to capture all the fragrant components (sfuma torchio). No waste. The bergamot oil captures all the facets of fresh bergamot into a linear more long-lasting note.

Calabrian bergamot is infused with the candied sweetness of bitter orange. The solar heart turns narcotic, exalted by the fruity whispers of sambac jasmine. Oceanian sandalwood

The overexploitation of the Indian sandalwood, led perfumers to look for other places for sandalwood and it led them to Oceania. Australian (sandalum spicatum & album) & New Caledonia (sandalum austrocaledonicum) have been used by aborigens for 40 000 years.

Musk

QUESTION 1 / 3

The right answer is: The gland of a deer

  • Natural musk was extracted from a gland in the male Himalayan musk deer (Moschus moschiferus), a practice now banned for ethical and environmental reasons.
  • Its fixative power helps anchor and prolong the other notes in a fragrance. Its animalic, skin-like scent added depth, warmth, and erotic appeal.

Musk

QUESTION 2 / 3

The right answer is: False

  • White musks are synthetic molecules created as ethical, cleansmelling alternatives to natural animalic musk. Through synthetic musks, the carnal sensuality of animalic musk was rediscovered, but without its dirty undertone.
  • The first synthetic musk, Musk Ketone, was discovered in 1888 by Albert Baur, originally while researching explosives!
  • During the 20th century, chemists succeeded in isolating musk from natural ingredients, ambrette seeds and angelica, then synthesized them to create musky notes with powdery, fruity, or milky accents.

Musk

QUESTION 3 / 3

The right answer is: Clean, Soft & Cottony

  • Unlike natural musk (animalic and heavy), synthetic musks are soft, clean and cottony.
  • In the 50’s, American detergent companies started to use them to enhance the scent of laundry detergents and fabric softeners, hence its name: white musk, as a reference to cozy clean linen.
  • Since then, many other synthetic musks have enriched the perfumer’s palette — sometimes metallic, fruity, or powdery.

Iris Pallida

  • Considered the highest quality for perfumery.
  • Very rich in irone.

Iris Germanica

  • From central Europe.
  • Slightly less delicate than Iris Pallida.

  • Due to the time, craftsmanship, and low yield, iris is among the most expensive ingredients in perfumery.
  • Its rarity is also a factor of its high cost:
    • It is harvested manually through a complex process requiring great expertise and care.
    • In the 20th century, rural exodus and rising labor costs pushed farmers toward more profitable crops (vines, olive trees), causing iris cultivation to retreat to marginal lands and decline rapidly.

“Akigala” evokes the word “Aki” (autumn) in Japanese, subtly nodding to the ingredient’s elegant, spicy, and slightly smoky character, like a crisp, woody autumn breeze.

  • Vanilla planifolia is hermaphroditic and requires pollination to fruit. In nature, only the Melipona bee (Mexico and Caribbean region) can pollinate it. The manual pollination technique was not discovered until 1841, enabling the expansion of vanilla pods cultivation. Today, vanilla is still hand-pollinated, most often by women known as “matchmakers.”

Olivier Pescheux imagined Divine Vanille as a tribute to vanilla, sustainably produced in Madagascar: mysterious, suave, deep, carnal… simply irresistible. Vanilla is expressed as a black vanilla, spicy and unsweetened, with liquorous and rhum-like accents.

VANILLA
Did you know?
Did you know ?

Real vanilla is more precious than silver. Due to climate risks, labor costs, and demand, natural vanilla is one of the most expensive spices in the world.

Vanilla has about 250 components, which develop subtly during fermentation to combine the countless flavors of its magical alchemy.

Vanillin is the main aroma molecule naturally found in vanilla pods. But today, most "vanilla" scents use synthetic vanillin to mimic its sweet note.

About 80% of the world’s vanilla comes from Madagascar, giving it the prestigious "Vanille Bourbon" label.

3 FACTS ABOUT Fabrice Pellegrin

Born into a family steeped in Grasse’s perfumery heritage: son of a perfumer, his grandmother a beloved jasmine picker and his grandfather a supplier of naturals for perfumery.

He divides his time between Paris and Firmenich’s research laboratories in Grasse.

His approach: create juices with a strong personality and an unmistakable imprint.

About the main ingredient

Patchouli essence

Dry wood, Smoky, Earthy

Indonesia

Steam distillation of patchouli leaves

Harvested three times a year, patchouli is dried and then steam-distilled to produce an intense essence. It reveals a rich olfactory palette, blending deep woody, camphoraceous, and earthy facets. Between shadow and light, it embodies a captivating duality, both fresh and sensual, addictive and bitter.

Patchouli

QUESTION 3 / 3

The right answer is: Earthy, Woody & Slightly Camphorated

  • Patchouli offers a rich and complex scent that opens with earthy and woody tones, often reminiscent of damp soil or forest undergrowth. In its fresh form, it can have a camphorated scent which softens over time.
  • As it ages, patchouli develops a warmer, rounder, and balsamic character, with nuances of dark chocolate, dried fruit, or soft leather.
  • Its musky and sensual undertones make it a favorite for fragrances seeking depth and mystery.

Did you know?

Patchouli has long been used in rituals and meditation to promote grounding, attraction, and energy cleansing.

Before its prestige in perfumery, patchouli was widely used in soaps, incense, and candles for its lasting scent.

Patchouli essential oil improves with age, becoming smoother, richer, and more balsamic over time.

Patchouli comes from a bushy herb in the mint family, not a wood, despite its woody scent.

Philosophy Behind Pairing

The goal is not to double the sale or create olfactory duplication, but to enhance the client relationship through an expert, personalized experience.

By guiding the client in combining an eau de parfum with another eau de parfum or extract, we invite them to become the creator of their own signature scent — unique and expressive.

“There are no rules — only your own olfactory style.”

The EDP association reinforces brand loyalty, showcases the perfumer’s craftsmanship, and positions Essential Parfums as a true Maison of expertise and creative freedom.

IMportant note

This approach can also be applied when speaking about layering with other fragrance brands, demonstrating openness, confidence, and professionalism.

How to spray your fragrance?

GOOD PRACTICE:
  • Spray onto your pulse points areas (wrist, behind the ears, elbow pit) as they are warmer areas that will make your fragrance shine.
  • Also you can spray behind the neck (for perfumed hugs), your hair for fragrant moves, and on your shoulders for you to smell it regularly.
To avoid:
  • Avoid spraying ionto the area between the nose and the chest: the fragrance would immediatly saturate your nose and give you the impression it doesn’t last because you can’t smell it…
  • Don't Rub it! Rubbing heats up the skin and can alter the scent and rubbing alcohol may irritate your skin.
  • Instead, spray, then wait. Let the alcohol evaporate naturally. This allows the perfume to unfold its true scent on your skin.

Nose fatigue:How to reset it?

DO:
  • Smell your own unscented skin, like the inside of your elbow. →Your brain is already used to your own scent, so it helps neutralize your sense of smell.
  • Quick Fix: Take a few deep breaths away from any fragrance or step outside briefly. Fresh air works wonders!
DON'T:
  • Skip the Coffee Beans: They contain hundreds of molecules, not neutral at all!
  • Most in-store beans are dusty and stale, they can actually confuse your nose more.

TIPS

Although a proper diagnosis with no more than 4 fragrances to discover should avoid saturation.

Fragrance products are always well-received, making them suitable from close friends to colleagues for birthdays, holidays, housewarmings, and thank-you gestures.

- A little luxury they’ll love, without spending a fortune.

How to store your fragrance to make it last?

DO:
  • Store in a cool, dry place (like a drawer or cabinet).
  • Keep it away from heat, light, and humidity.
  • If unopened, keep it in its original box for even longer life.
DON'T:
  • Avoid storing in the bathroom (too humid).
  • Don’t leave bottles near windows or in direct sunlight.
  • Don’t place near radiators or heat sources.
TIPS

If you wear multiple fragrances and rotate often, proper storage will help each one last for years even if used only occasionally!

"I create object of desire"

An object must have a history that you seek to appropriate fo yourself. It speaks, to the unconscious. Frequently it encourages you to touch it and engage in an emotional dialogue with it. Of necessity, it creates an attachment. I like to emphasise this moment filled with promises and desires, juste before physical contact with the object.
