A sala do Fichário abriga a chefia técnica do Serviço de Biblioteca e Documentação da Faculdade de Direito da USP (SBD-FDUSP), parte do Serviço de Atendimento ao Usuário (SAU), terminais de pesquisa e arquivos que guardam fichas em papel utilizadas – com maior frequência antes do advento dos sistemas informatizados de busca e pesquisa bibliográficas – para localizar documentos no acervo da Biblioteca Central, mas que, ainda hoje, são consultadas à procura especialmente daqueles mais antigos. O conjunto da Biblioteca Central (BC) é composto por uma chapelaria, onde os usuários deixam seus pertences ao entrar, pela Sala de Consulta (SC) e por um depósito anexo de ingresso restrito a pessoal autorizado que, dividido em 4 pavimentos, abriga um acervo multidisciplinar, mas majoritariamente de interesse jurídico, constituído por cerca de 300 mil documentos – de livros, teses, dissertações e periódicos a produções docentes coligidas em pastas na Hemeroteca – disponibilizados ao público em geral para consulta local e, a depender do estado de conservação, para fotocópias. Tanto a sala do Fichário quanto o conjunto da BC são tombados pelo Conselho de Defesa do Patrimônio Histórico, Arqueológico, Artístico e Turístico do Estado de São Paulo (Condephaat) e pelo Conselho Municipal de Preservação do Patrimônio Histórico, Cultural e Ambiental (Conpresp).

O Prédio Histórico da Faculdade de Direito da USP abriga, em seu andar térreo, com exceção de periódicos e folhetos, os acervos das bibliotecas departamentais DIN, DCO, DCV e DTB; em seu primeiro andar, o Fichário e o conjunto da Biblioteca Central (BC), com sua chapelaria, sua Sala de Consulta (SC) e o acesso a um depósito contíguo – de ingresso reservado a pessoal autorizado – com 4 pavimentos que guardam a maior parte de seu acervo; e, em seu segundo andar, a Sala dos Periódicos das bibliotecas departamentais DCO, DCV, DIN, DPC/DPM e DTB.
