The Wolf and the Heron

Wolf was a dangerous animal, no doubt about it: sharp teeth, sharp claws, sharp eyes. No one wanted to go near Wolf, not if they would help it. As for Wolf – she prowled and she pounced and she scavenged her meals. She wasn’t around to make friends. Not, that is, until she got a bone stuck in her throat. That bone itched and it scratched and it tickled, and no matter how much she coughed, it wouldn’t come up. “Argh!” rasped Wolf. “I can’t live like this. I don’t want to eat, I don’t want to hunt. I just need to get rid of this cursed bone!” Wolf looked everywhere for help. She asked the deer and the ants and the snakes, even the birds in the trees. They all shook their heads. “We’re not going near you,” they said.

At last, Wolf met a heron, who agreed to remove the bone for a fee. “Five gold coins should cover it,” said Heron. Wolf opened her jaws wide and Heron stuck his neck right in. He reached all the way down Wolf’s throat and plucked out the bone with his beak. “My money, please,” said Heron. Wolf gave a snarly laugh. “No money for you, old bird. Isn’t it enough that you put your head in a wolf’s throat…and lived!” “What trick is this?” cried Heron. “Not a trick,” said Wolf, “but a lesson.” Moral: Don’t expect rewards from the wicked.
