The Ant and the Dove – Part One

Ant was thirsty, but the path down to the stream was steep and the stream itself flowed fast and deep. Ant knew she would have to be careful, but she was desperate for a drink. She crept down to the bank, keeping close to the ground, then clambered onto a blade of grass that arched above the water. “I’ll be safe here,” she told herself, gripping the grass with her legs. Then along came a sudden gust of wind. Ant screamed. She tried to hold on but the wind was too strong. She sailed through the air, a little brown dot with flailing legs, until…SPLISH!

The stream carried her this way and that. The burbling water tumbled over her, pushing her down. She bobbed back up again, gasping for breath. “Help!” cried Ant. “Help!” She never thought anyone would hear – her voice a faint whisper drowned out by the rushing water. But then, looking up, she saw a dove circling overhead, as if he were trying to find a way to help. Ant watched as the dove flew to a nearby tree, snapped off a twig from a branch then swooped down to the water. Gently, he dropped the twig in.

Ant was thirsty, but the path down to the stream was steep and the stream itself flowed fast and deep. Ant knew she would have to be careful, but she was desperate for a drink.

Reveal Explainer

The word ‘steep’ hints that Ant could slip or fall while going down the path. The water flowed ‘fast and deep’. This shows the water is dangerous because it could carry Ant away if she falls in.
