A much needed success
Released in 1985 with 32 levels and local co-op with precise controls and a memorable soundtrack. This game revitalised the gaming industry after the 1983 crash and popularised the 2D platforming genre.

The NES
Launched in in 1983 and 1985 sold 61 million units!
Had games like Super Mario Bro's and The Legend of Zelda, and had over 1000 titles to play!
The Legend of Zelda
The first Legend of Zelda pioneered non-linear gameplay, and open world exploration. This has had a massive impact on the video game industry as a whole.

1990's
Innovation ensues with the release of more home consoles, for example the PS1.
Crash Bandicoot
Crash Bandicoot was an innovative, console exclusive, third person platformer that introduced impressive technical and design elements to the genre.
Crash also acted as Playstation's mascot, something they were lacking in comparison to Sega and Nintendo, allowing them to fill in the gap in their marketing.
Sonic The Hedgehog can be considered as the first proper rival to Nintendo's Mario, and was a key component for the sucess of the Sega Genesis
Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow pioneered handheld multiplayer with its battling and trading mechanics, with just over 150 pokemon to collect there was a lot of content if you were willing to find it.
2000's
WIth the release of the Xbox 360, PS3, and the Wii, games have never been better.
Halo 1 revolutionised the FPS genre, with it being an Xbox exclusive, it took advantage of the dual analogue sticks of the controller and truly mastered them with things like aim assist. Setting an unbeatable standard in the genre that is still in use to this day.
Resident Evil 4
Resident Evil 4 revolutionalised the series with it's over the shoulder camera and really making you feel like you were right in the middle of the action with the main character. This tied together with it's upgrade system made for a satisfying gameplay loop, and had a good sense of progression.
Sonic Unleashed was different from the previous games in the franchise, they switched up the gameplay by a lot, going from somewhat precise platforming and solving puzzles with speed, to breakneck speeds and having to rely on reaction time in order to react to any changes in the level before you run into a wall.
This game had a lot to prove after the disastrous failures of Sonic The Hedgehog (2006) and Sonic and The Secret Rings (2007), and only barely abled to pass the bar. The highlight of the game was definitely the day time stages, with the fast paced levels and quick reaction times paired with gorgeous visuals and amazing stage music. However, the other half of the game was much more controversial. With it's Devil May Cry and God of War inspired combat, many were disappointed, and some outright hated, the tonal shift from the day time stages, to the slow and more combat orientated levels that take much longer to complete
Conclusion
Video games have been around for a long time, and probably will continue to be so for a long while. However, we're getting to the point where major graphical improvements are no longer feasible. Instead we should take inspiration from older games and focus more on a coherent artstyle rather than photo realism, and actually optimising their games, for the sake of everybodys storage.
Fun fact!
The first Zelda game had the first ever save function in gaming history at the time. An innovation that has spread into basically every game ever since.
Did you Know?
Mario was first seen in 1981 in Donkey Kong where he was called 'Jumpman' where he had to rescue someone from Donkey Kong
