Femicide is the killing of a woman or girl because she is a woman. It is motivated by hatred, a sense of superiority, and control over women. The most common perpetrators of femicide are former or current husbands and partners and other male close family members of the victim.

Prevention Education

The Croatian Criminal Act was amended in 2024

• A new crime is the introduction of the criminal offense of aggravated murder of a female. The penalty is from a minimum of 10 years to long-term imprisonment.

• A definition of gender-based violence against women is introduced, which means violence directed at a woman because she is a woman or that disproportionately affects women.
