Learning Through the Lives of Ray Charles and Helen Keller

Our current ELA (Knowledge domain) unit is all about learning and exploring our five senses. During this unit we came across biographies of Mr. Ray Charles (world famous musician who was blind) and Ms.Helen Keller (an American author, disability rights advocate, political activist and lecturer; she was blind and deaf). Not only this inspired our students but it also got them deeply involved about the major events in the lives of Mr.Ray Charles and Ms. Helen Keller. Students showed their curiosity by asking further questions to deepen their understanding. To take them a step further, we created timelines based on the biographies of Mr.Ray Charles and Ms. Helen Keller. They also made self reflections and shared what they felt were important events in these biographies. It was a proud moment to see these young learners so involved in the inquiry process and having meaningful conversations.

Leaves are Falling and Autumn is Calling

This week in Year 1 Blue, we have been exploring the wonders of the seasons, with a special focus on autumn. After reading Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert, the children went on a nature walk around our school campus to collect colourful leaves that had gently fallen from the trees. Using their collections, they created imaginative leaf people and leaf animals inspired by the story, bringing a touch of nature into our classroom.Linking to our science topic on plants, we have also been learning about how plants grow and what they need to stay healthy. The children planted their own seeds and are enjoying taking care of them each day by watering them and making sure they get plenty of sunlight. It has been wonderful to watch their excitement as they begin to see small shoots appear. In our writing lessons, the children used the beauty of autumn as inspiration to describe seasonal scenes, thinking carefully about the colours, textures, and changes they could observe around them. We also created lovely leaf rubbings and autumnal artwork that now brighten our classroom walls. Saudi Arabia is especially beautiful during this time of year, and the children have truly enjoyed celebrating the season through their art, writing, and science learning.

Discovering the World Through the Five Senses

Our kindergarten students embarked on an exciting journey to explore the fascinating world of the five senses. Their curiosity, enthusiasm, and deep desire to learn were evident throughout this engaging exploration. Through a series of interactive and sensory-rich activities, they developed a meaningful understanding of how their sense organs help them connect with and interpret the world around them. As part of their learning adventure, our kindergarteners learned about Ray Charles and Helen Keller, two amazing people who didn’t let their challenges stop them from doing great things. Their stories inspired the children to believe in themselves, stay positive, and keep trying no matter what! The unit ended on a high note as students created their very own Mr. Potato Head, applying everything they learned about the five senses in a fun, hands-on way. Their bright smiles, laughter, and creativity made this activity a joyful and unforgettable finale to their learning journey! While creating their Potato Heads, laughter filled the room when Ahmed looked at his and shouted, “It looks like Humpty Dumpty—he’s ripped!” Instantly, the whole class began singing “Humpty Dumpty” together, giggling nonstop as they compared their Potato Heads to the famous egg who had a great fall!

Exploring Nature Around Our School

Our class started this term by taking part in a wonderful outdoor learning adventure on our school grounds! Using our “ super senses” we set out to discover the hidden beauty and magic of nature all around us. Ready with small collection bags, we gathered fallen treasures such as leaves of different shapes and sizes, twigs, seeds and interesting stones. We took time to observe the colours, textures and sounds of the natural world we often overlook. To our surprise, we also came across tiny woodland animals living nearby. It was exciting to realise how much wildlife makes its home in our school environment. Back in the classroom, we set up a nature table to display our discoveries. Everyone enjoyed sharing their findings. It was a lovely reminder that nature's magic can be found not just in faraway woodlands, but right outside our classroom door.
