Good morning/afternoon everyone. Today I’m going to talk about Halloween, one of the most popular celebrations in the world, especially in the United States, but also in many other countries.

Halloween comes from an ancient Celtic festival called Samhain, celebrated over 2,000 years ago in Ireland. The Celts believed that on the night of October 31st, the spirits of the dead returned to visit the living. To protect themselves, people lit bonfires and wore costumes to scare away evil spirits.Later, this tradition mixed with the Christian holiday All Saints’ Day, and that’s where the name “Halloween” came from — it means “All Hallows’ Eve.”

Today, Halloween is celebrated with many fun activities: Children wear costumes of monsters, ghosts, or funny characters and go door to door saying “Trick or treat!” to get candy. Houses are decorated with carved pumpkins, called Jack-o’-lanterns, which represent lost souls. People also have costume parties, watch horror movies, and tell scary stories.

in Mexico, we also celebrate Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead), which is similar but more traditional. Some people mix both celebrations — children go trick-or-treating on October 31st, and families make altars for their loved ones on November 1st and 2nd.
The most common Halloween symbols are the pumpkin, the bat, the black cat, witches, ghosts, and spider webs. All of them represent mystery and the supernatural.
