Nikandros lamenta che i meteci, gli stranieri residenti, paghino tasse più elevate dei cittadini pur non avendo diritto di voto nell'Ekklesia. "Non è giusto," dice, "lavoro e commercio quanto un ateniese, ma non posso possedere terre né partecipare alla democrazia." Mio padre gli ha risposto: "Eppure sei protetto dalle nostre leggi e puoi arricchirti con il commercio. Non tutti possono essere cittadini, altrimenti che valore avrebbe la cittadinanza? Persino Pericle ha ristretto i requisiti: solo chi ha entrambi i genitori ateniesi può essere cittadino." Mi chiedo se sia davvero equo. Il nostro maestro di filosofia ci insegna a interrogarci su tutto.
