My BSN Journey: The Path of Growth and Resilience

Jordyn Bason University of Wyoming Fay W. Whitney School of Nursing BSN NURS 4855: Contemporary Nursing Practice Whiteney Peterson, DNP, MSN-Ed, RN November 7th, 2025

Jordyn Bason, RN, BSN Candidate

After multiple restorative operations, hospitalizations, and years of physical therapy, I regained the ability to walk at a normal capacity. The nurses who cared for me changed my life and showed me the power of compassion and skill. My purpose became clear, I knew I had to help others on their worst day the way I was helped on mine.

The fuel on the fire

Where it all began

At age 19 I was involved in a fatal motor vehicle crash that changed the trajectory of my life. My life was saved through the hard work and dedication of the healthcare team, and I was confined to a wheelchair for some time after.

I graduated in May of 2025 with my ADN in nursing from Sheridan Community College while concurrently pursuing my BSN in nursing. I accepted a job in the ICU following graduation and will complete the BSN program in December of 2025.

The start of my nursing journey began with my older sister who I watched become a nurse when I was in elementary school. At a young age I was able to recognize the dedication she had and the heart she put into achieving her goals. This was entirely inspiring to me.

The start of school

Graduation

The first year is over

During the second year of nursing school, I was able to complete my preceptorship in the ICU, which is the specialty I was most interested in. My time on the unit solidified my passion for critical care. I graduated the program in May of 2025 and was offered a position in the ICU.

I started my college education in 2021 with nursing prerequisites. Upon completing these courses in 2023, I took the entrance exam and was accepted into Sheridan Community College Nursing Program and was set to start in the Fall of 2023.

After the first year of nursing school I passed the LPN-NCLEX and applied for a position on the long-term rehabilitation unit at Sheridan Memorial Hospital, part time, night shift. I subsequently became IV certified for this position.

The second year

In the Fall of 2023 I began the nursing program in hopes of graduating with my ADN in nursing practice. At this time in my journey I had no previous medical experience; this was all new to me. I dually enrolled at the University of Wyoming to start my BSN journey.

My experience as an LPN helped shaped me as a nurse. I gained valuable knowledge and skills such as managing 10 patients at once, prioritization, teamwork, and ultimately started the foundation of my independence.

My BSN Journey: The Path of Growth and Resilience

Transformational leadership in nursing can be described as motivational, inspirational, supportive, and empowering to work towards a shared goal to deliver exceptional patient outcomes.

(American Nurses Association, 2023)

In my unit, the providers work closely with the nurses and rely heavily on our assessments, and I utilize the knowledge I gained from pharmacology and pathophisiology every shift.

Full time RN

I began orienting to the ICU full time at the begining of July of 2025, and officially started on my own in September. It has been a steep learning curve, and I embrace the challenge every day.

Ideal advocate

My leadership philosophy

BSN learning

The BSN coursework has helped strengthen my critical thinking skills and solidified the importance of adhering to evidence-based practices.

My ideal nursing advocate is someone who is willing to fight for their patient to receive the best possible care. To be their voice when they feel unheard or small.

My ideal nursing leader is an educator, is compassionate, supportive, motivating, inspiring, and works alongside their team and not above them.
