Review
If you have some existing research or information on your family tree, we will briefly review what you already know to establish how we can help you. If you have never had any research carried out before, we will ask you for the names, years and locations of birth of any ancestors you already know about. We will use these to assess how feasible it is to research your chosen line of your family tree. Following this, we will prepare a short proposal for your research project.
Final payment due
Your final payment is due within 14 days of having received your final research reports. This payment is the final 30% of the original amount stated in your contract. As with your first two payments, we will supply you with a payment link and our bank details, so that you can make this payment in whatever way suits you. However, we do not accept payments by credit card, due to the fees we are charged using this method.
Initial consultation
We will organise a 30 minute consultation - either by phone or video call - to discuss your research proposal with you. This consultation is free of charge. This consultation will cover:
- the feasibility of the research you have requested, based on the information you have provided us with
- our recommended package or packages for your project
- the costs and timescales involved
- what you will receive at the end of your project
- answering any questions you might have
Make an enquiry
Send us an email to info@garnhams.com Let us know which of our packages you are interested in and outline any previous research you have done or commissioned. We'll usually get back with you within three working days. We may ask for more information about what you already know, so that we can help you fully.
Elusive ancestors
We are experienced family historians and have access to a wide range of sources to try and locate and verify your ancestors. We have broken down many 'brick walls'. However, sometimes ancestors can be tricky to pin down. This is more likely to be a problem if your ancestors had a common name (for example, John Smith and Mary Price), were born out of wedlock or emigrated. This is one of the reasons we ask for information about the ancestors you are looking for when you first enquire. We carry out a check to see if we are likely to be able to locate them, before your initial consultation, so that we can be transparent about the best research approach and package for you. In the event that we cannot verify your ancestral line with using our usual sources, we will contact you to discuss your options. At the very least, we will produce a full research report that details all of the searches we made and avenues we explored in attempting to track down your ancestor.
Your research
Now we undertake your research. If you have questions during this period, you are welcome to contact us by email. If we encounter any unforeseen problems in progressing your project that we cannot overcome, we will contact you via email to arrange a time to discuss your options. Otherwise, we'll get in touch once the underlying research for your project is complete.
Traditional lineage research
We are experienced in genealogical research, drawing on birth, baptism, census, marriage, death and burial records to build a verfiable family tree for you. If you are looking to map out the names, dates and locations in which your ancestors lived, then this is the type of research you need. This research also provides a foundation for our deep dive research work, should you choose.
Initial payment
We ask for an inital deposit of 35% of the total cost of your research. This covers the up front costs of obtaining certificates and archive access to begin your research, as well as contributing to the payment of your final bill. We will provide you with a payment link, as well as our bank details, so that you can decide how to make this payment in a way that suits you. We cannot begin your research until your deposit is received. Any timescales we have agreed for delivery of your research will only begin once your deposit is received.
Locations
The recent digitisation of many archives used for genealogical research means that we can research your ancestors from anywhere in the world. We have experience researching ancestors from England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, the USA, Canada and South Africa, as well as mainland Greece. Please let us know where your ancestors were from, and we'll let you know if we can help you. Our location in Glasgow, Scotland means that we also have easy access to many undigitised archives across the Scottish central belt, including Glasgow, Paisley Edinburgh and surrounding towns. We also have connections in Inverness and the Outer Hebrides. If there is a partiular archive you are looking to access, please get in touch.
Timescales
As a guide, our smallest lineage research package (Bronze) takes around 2 weeks to complete, while our smallest deep dive research package (Diamond) takes around 3 weeks. Our largest lineage research package (Platinum) takes around 8 weeks to complete. As soon as your contract is issued, we will book your project into our diary and let you know the estimated completion date, in that contract. If we already have a number of projects underway, we may not be able to begin your research straight away, but we will let you know when we will begin and when we expect to be finished. If you have a deadline for your project (for example, a significant birthday or anniversary) please let us know when you first get in touch.
Contract
Following your initial consultation and the discussion we have at that meeting, we will draw up a contract for your research. We will email this contract to you to review and sign, if you are content to go ahead with your research. The costs and timescales on your contract are valid for 21 days from the date it is issued, so you have plenty of time to consider whether or not it meets your needs. We are happy to answer any further questions you might have over email during this period.
Dr Lisa Garnham
Lisa has been carrying out genealogical research since 2011. Her passion is reconstructing the untold stories of ordinary people, using archival records and genealogical research. She has extensive professional expertise in turning written research reports into engaging, visual, interactive products. Lisa gained her PhD in public health and social history in 2014, following an undergraduate degree at the Universty of Glasgow in Geography. She also holds two post graduate certificates, one in Research Methods and the other in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education. When not carrying out genealogical research, Lisa works as a lecturer in social policy at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland.
Kevin MacNeil
Kevin MacNeil has been writing fictionalised stories of historical people since 2002. His passion is imagining the day to day moments in the lives of people from history and writing powerful stories to capture those imagined moments. His expertise is in bringing together historical facts about individuals, with broader social and historical facts about the contexts in which they lived, to create meaningful fictional stories about them. Kevin gained a first class honours degree in English Literature from the University of Glasgow in 2010. He also holds a post graduate diploma in Secondary English Teaching.
Artificial Intelligence
We do not use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to draft your reports or ancestor stories. Some of the online search tools we use to locate your ancestors have AI features built in, but these features are only used to enhace their database searches or transcribe archival records. We never use AI to draft text or images or to produce outlines or summaries of reports. This means that 100% of the written reports you receive as part of your commission are devised and written by a human, and not by AI. This is to ensure that:
- the reports your receive are accurate
- the reports you receive are well written and engaging
- none of your data or data about your ancestors is ever entered into or used to train an AI large language model
Your reports
Now we create your final reports, narrative stories and any other agreed products based on the research we have underaken. If you have questions during this period, you are welcome to contact us by email. We will get in touch once these reports are complete.
If you have a deadline for your project (for example, a significant birthday or anniversary) please let us know when you first get in touch.
Qualifications
Lisa has a PhD in public health and social history, two post graduate certificates (one in Research Methods and the other in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education) and an undergraduate degree in Geography. Kevin has a postgraduate diploma in Secondary Education (English) and a first class honours degree in English Literature. Lisa Garnham Genealogy is a registered data contoller with the Information Comissioner's Office, which means that any data we hold is protected by GDPR.
Deep dive lifecourse research
This is where your ancestors really start to come alive. With this research, we focus on one individual from your tree and thoroughly research their extended family life, the homes they lived in and the jobs they held. To build a rich picture, we search a wide range of records, including newspaper archives, criminal and poor law records and more.
Engaging story presentations
We draw on our years of experience as professional writers and educators, to present your research in the most exciting ways possible. These include: beautifully written historical narratives, complete with images of the records found during research; emotionally charged fictionalised short stories inspired by pivotal moments in your ancestors' lives; and interactive digital timelines that offer fresh ways for you and your family to engage with these stories.
Progress update
Once your underlying research is complete, we will let you know by email. At this stage, we will have finished doing your research but will not yet have created any final reports. In this progress update we will outline:
- A high level summary of our research findings
- Any areas where we have not been able to complete your research and why
- The plan for producing your final research reports and when they will be ready
We are happy to answer any questions you have at this stage by email. Once you are satisfied with our progress, your second payment is due. This payment is 30% of the total agreed cost at the outset of your project. We cannot progress to producing your final reports until we have received this payment.
The finished product
Once completed, proofread and typeset, we will email you your final research. What you receive will vary depending on the package you have chosen, but this will have been outlined in your contract. All of our research reports are delivered electronically by email (for example, as PDF files), unless you have purchased an add on for us to produce a physical book or poster. We want to make sure you are happy with the research you commissioned, so if you have any questions or feedback at this stage, we are keen to hear from you.
