The photos were delivered to the Red Cross as "proof" that prisoners in Auschwitz were being not malnourished, maltreated or being exterminated. In fact, just a few meters away Hungarian Jews were being exterminated in the gas chambers.

Local Original Deportation List
Local authorities had lists of Jewish girls' names who were of the correct age for work. Addresses of their family's homes were listed along with their birthdates. You can see Edit and Lea Friedmannova #15 and #16 on this list. The check mark means they showed up at the school, where they were examinded and then taken to the train station. Edith tells about this experience in the book, 999, pages 50-55, by Macadam, Heather Dune.

Lea and Edith
Edith was 17 years old when she and her older sister, Lea, signed up for government work service with 101 other girls from their hometown. Deported to Auschwitz on the first Jewish transport on 25 March 1942. Leah took care of Edith when she fell ill with Typhus and kept her working, so she was not selected to die in the gas. Then Lea fell ill. Her Typhus was worse than Edith's and she was taken to Block 25 - the Block of Death. On the 5 December, Shabbat Chanukah, 10,000 girls were selected to die and gassed. Lea was among them.

Magda's family
Magda was hiding when the Hlinka guard began beating her father, "where is your daughter?" She came out to save him and was deported. The story of how her father tried to rescue her by chasing the train was detailed by her best friend's brother, Giora Amir.

Block 25
Bertha and Peshy were put in Block 25, known as the orthodox block. After the war ended, Bertha posed in many photos for the British soldiers to demonstrate the living conditions.

This is a posed photo taken soon after liberation of Bergen Belsen April 1945. Bertha is in the center, facing the camera. She was used in two other photos, all posed. Please note: This photo was incorrectly captioned in the press and subsequently in archives as identifying prisioners "sick with typhus." Bertha was not ill. In fact, despite being just 18 years old, she helped save the lives of girls who were ill with typhus.

Bone Tuberculosis
Despite surviving three years in Auschwitz, the bone tuberculosis that Edith contracted in the camps, returned with a vengence after she and Ladislav were married. She was pregnant at the time and had to have a "medical interuption" or an abortion, to save her life. Then she was sent to Switzerland where she was nursed for two years. She did finally recover and was able to have a child, but her knee was fused and she was never able to bend it again. She used a cane to walk. At the age of 92, she was still taking a bus to the grocery store.
- 1943, After Lea died, Edith became very ill. Her lager sister, Elsa Rosenthal took her to Dr. Manci Swalbova.
- Dr. Schwalbova saved Edith's life by hiding her from selections and Dr. Mengele.
- Edith was able to survive the death march with the help of her friend Irena Fein.

Biographer's note
"I met Edith in 2018, when I was traveling with 2G and 3G children of survivors through Slovakia, Poland and Auschwitz. Our first interview encapsulated Edith's story, but for the next three years we would work together unearthing more stories and making connections between girls in the camps that had never been made. Edith's memory was excellent and she had a rare ability of being able to analyze her experience; she didn't live inside the trauma, as some did. By the time I met Edith she was 92 years old. 70th Anniversary
Edith met many Slovak and Israeli dignataries over the years, but the recreaetion of the transport from Poprad to Auscwhitz in 2012 with Prime Minister, Iveta Radičová, was perhaps the most momentous occasion. In 2018, a plaque was placed on the former barracks, now a school, where the girls were held before they were deported. After that ceremony, Edith met with the President of Slovakia, Robert Fico. Events honoring the first transport began in early 2000 thanks to Dr. Pavol Mestan, director of Bratislava Museum of Jewish History

These photographs were taken by SS photographer, XX, and according to Linda Reich # were posed. The photos were delivered to the Red Cross as "proof" that prisoners in Auschwitz were being not malnourished, maltreated or being exterminated. In fact, just a few meters away Hungarian Jews were being exterminated in the gas chambers.
