FUN FACT: Participants 18-60+ were in an experiment: Older adults showed stronger brain activity when music was played. Younger adults reactions to nostalgia was found to be based on their thinking skills and personality rather than how they felt in the moment of hearing the song, unlike the older adults.
How does music affect our memory?
Along with the hippocampus, our limbic system is what plays a role in the retrieval of long term memories and the hippocampus acts as a carrier. The limbic system is how we can process emotions and how we respond to them. This explains why music evokes feelings of nostalgia and old memories, good or bad.
Music can treat our brains, similar to the effcts of medicine. Music memory is stored in a different area and doesnt entirely rely on hippocampus like our general memories do. This was found when musicians developed memory loss (alzheimers + amnesia) and had forgotten past events but could sight read and play music perfectly
These three things work together to form and use memories. The HC turns new memories into long term. The frontal cortex is what helps us decide what matters and will bring them back when we need them. The inner cortex adds emotion and meanings to the memories.

Music has been proven to have an influence on identity and self expression ------------------------------------------------
SOCIAL
Self Expression
Identity
--Music helps people understand who they are, by matching the genres and artists to their personality. --Music can represent stages of life. Teenagers exploring who they are vs adults looking back on their younger self. Example: Someone who really likes hip hop might connect it to their life + who they want to be. A person who grew up hearing certain music (maybe cultural) might feel that is apart of who they are.
--Music gives people a way to express emotions and personality, without having to talk out loud. --Creating playlits, songs, or just choosing what you want to listen to are all forms of expressing your feelings. Example: When people put songs on instagram notes. It can express their feelings, their music taste, or be trying to reach someone without directly speaking to them.
------------------------------------------
THERAPY Music creates a sense of safety and understanding. It is easier to connect feelings with music and sound rather than speaking out loud. Music also calms the nervous system so if you wanted to speak, you may feel better about doing so. Music is often played in counselor and therapy offices to comfort the patient and help them communicate better. ------------------------------------ Parkinsons: --------------------- People who were diagnosed with parkinsons disease and could no longer move well would have music playing in the back of physical therapy sessions. This made them more motivated and had better progress results. This proves music helps in all kinds of therapy.

- Melodies and rythym give the brain a pattern which make it easier to retain the information you are learning. This is why soft and quiet music are most effective for studying.
- Stress and anxiety block focus and performance. Music reduces stress and anxiety, furthering its support in cognitive performance.
THE MIND OVERALL
ACCURACY + REACTION TIME
- Upbeat music such as electric, rap, or pop, increases alertness which makes your brain respond faster. This is common in training or working out.
- Opposite to that, slow music makes you move slower because you are relaxed. This again is better for studying or focusing.
- Music with lots of lyrics, melody, and rythym creates slower reaction time because it takes attention away easier.
