What are adjectives?

  • words that describe a noun
    • ANSWERS THE QUESTIONS:
      • What kind? We studied modern history.
      • How many? I read four books.
      • Which one? That chair is broken.

Proper Adjectives

  • Adjectives formed from proper nouns
    • THEY BEGIN WITH CAPITAL LETTERS
      • EX: We ate Italian food.

common Adjectives

  • a descriptive word that modifies a noun and isn't a proper adjective
  • common adjectives aren't capitalized, unless they start a new sentence
    • ex: The funny teacher kept the class engaged.

  • THAT: Use with singular nouns and points out something far away.
    • EX: That door

  • THESE: Use with plural nouns and points out something close.
    • EX: These chairs
  • THOSE: Use with plural nouns and points out something far away.
    • EX: Those windows

Articles

  • Used to modify a noun.
    • Examples: A, an, the

A: Refers to any one item of a group.

  • Used before words that begin with a consonant.

The: Points to a specific item or items.

An: Refers to any one item of a group.

  • Used before words that start with a vowel.
