The Wild Robot

The Wild Robot is a children's chapter book about a robot, called Roz, who washes up on an island and learns to survive among animals who then become her friends. At first Roz was unsure about the island and the creatures that live around her, she gains their trust and raises an orphaned gosling named Brightbill. There are conflicts where Roz must protect herself and her new friends to defend their home against the ones who are out to shut Roz down. The story explores themes of friendship and survival. Peter Brown uses personification to bring the island, and its creatures to life, showing how even a robot can learn to love and fit in even if they don't seem to belong.

Camouflage (noun) – colors or patterns that help something blend into its surroundings. Mechanical (adjective) – made of parts that move together like a machine. Adventure (noun) – an exciting or unusual experience. Adapt (verb) – to change in order to fit new surroundings or conditions. To informally assess these vocabulary words, I will have students write two or three sentences using the vobcaulary words correctly to decribe Roz and her experience.
