A Lei nº2011, de 2 de Abril de 1946 estabelece a organização dos serviços prestadores de cuidados de saúde então existentes, lançando a base para uma rede hospitalar.

Os hospitais e as carreiras de saúde, são objeto de uniformização e de regulação através do Decreto-Lei nº 48357.

O Dr. Ricardo Jorge inicia a organização dos serviços de saúde pública com decreto de 28 de Dezembro.

A Lei nº2120, de 19 de Julho de 1963, promulga as bases da política de saúde e assistência.

A publicação do Decreto-Lei nº35108, de 07 de Novembro de 1945. São criados institutos dedicados a saúde publica

Publicação do "Despacho Arnaut" no Diário da República. Acesso aos Serviços Médico-Sociais para todos os cidadãos, independentemente da capacidade contributiva. Universalidade, generalidade e gratuitidade dos cuidados de saúde e comparticipação medicamentosa

Aprovação da carreira de enfermagem pelo Decreto-Lei nº 305/81.

Aprovada a Lei Orgânica do IX Governo, que cria o Ministério da Saúde (Decreto-Lei n.º 344-A/83). Aprovado o Regulamento dos Centros de Saúde, que surgem como unidades integradas de saúde (Despacho Normativo n.º 97/83).

Criação das Administrações Regionais de Saúde (ARS) pelo Decreto-Lei nº 254/82.

Criação do Serviço Nacional de Saúde (SNS) pela Lei nº 56/79. Acesso garantido a todos os cidadãos, independentemente da condição económica e social.

Criação da Direção-Geral dos Cuidados de Saúde Primários (Decreto-Lei n.º 74-C/84). Expansão do SNS aos serviços médico-sociais da Previdência. O clínico geral adquire o estatuto de médico de família.
