The KBA Standard
The KBA Standard ensures a consistent global approach in identifying Key Biodiversity Areas. KBAs apply to all biodiversity in all realms; the process is taxonomically inclusive.

Identifying KBAs at the national level
We recommend that KBAs be proposed through a KBA National Coordination Group (NCG) where they exist in a country. However, KBAs can be proposed by individuals directly if there is no KBA NCG. The KBA NCG is a committee of relevant individuals representing different institutions who can engage other experts in the KBA identification process. The committee can be made up of taxonomic experts, government officials, conservation NGOs, representatives of Indigenous Peoples, private sector, and so on. NCGs coordinate KBA proposals for the country and continue to be engaged in the monitoring and conservation of the identified KBAs. For more information on how to form an NCG and to learn about the NCG composition, please refer to the guidance document.

- Take our KBA Training Course available in English, Portuguese, Spanish, and French.
- The site is officially recognised as a Key Biodiversity Area.
- It is published in the World Database of KBAs.
- It is added to the Integrated Biodiversity Assessment Tool (IBAT), a platform widely used by businesses to support biodiversity-informed decision-making.
