Elements of Design

  • Line- divide or order an image
  • Color- color holds symbolism and can evoke emotion
  • Shape- shape also holds symbolism and can divide or order an image
  • Size- different element sizes in a visual tell us what is important and where to put our attention first
  • Space- empty space orders an image and can communicate meaning
  • Value- Light and darkness shapes the tone and moode of an image-- can also carry symbolic meaning.
  • Texture- helps break up an image and evoke specific sensations in the viewer.

Genre and Conventions

Genre: a category of composition or creative works that are characterized by similarities in form, style, or subject. Your familiar with these genres: fantasy, true crime, romance, mystery, horror, etc. But genres are also: emails, flyers, billboards, academic articles, proposals, menus, brochures, videos (tik tok vs youtube-- both their own genre), commercials, advertisments, reviews, infographics, instagram posts, blogs, resumes and cover letters, memes, etc. Genre convention: The similarities that can be consistently found in works from a specific genre. Analyzing Arguments

When analyzing an argument, remember to consider the following:

  • What is the conclusion or main idea of the argument?
  • Is the conclusion supported with sufficient evidence?
  • Is the evidence relevant to the conclusion?
  • Is the evidence reliable?
