Florida Cession

February 22, 1821

The US and Andrew Jackson were being increasingly aggressive to the Spanish-owned Florida. Spain decided keeping Florida was not worth the trouble and they and the US made the Adams-Onis Treaty, giving Florida to the US.

Mexican Cession

February 2, 1848

Mexico lost in the Mexican-American War and Meixco has to cede a large amount of its land as a result. This was formalized by the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, and the US paid Mexico around $15 million. The large new territory caused debates over whether slavery should be allowed there or not, which increased the tensions that led to the Civil War.

Oregon Trail

The Oregon Trail was a route that started near the Mississippi River and led to Oregon City in the Oregon Territory. Many people used this route to get to the fertile land for farming west of the Rocky Mountains. Initially people came by foot or horse, but then people started using wagons to come.

Texas Annexation

December 29, 1945

Texas declared independence from Mexico in 1836, and considered itself a separate country for 9 years before being annexed by the US. The annexation was controversial because many people wanted new territory, but others did not want another slave state and feared it would start a war with Mexico, who did not consider Texas to be independent. The annexation did end up starting the Mexican-American War.

California Trail

The California Trail was a route connecting areas around the Missouri River to California. It used similar paths as the Oregon and Mormon Trails. Near California, it splits and goes to different areas and cities in California. It was used during the Gold Rush.

Texas Revolution

1836

Many white settlers moved to northern Mexico in order to buy cheap farmland. Howeveer, due to the large influx of white people, Mexico started restricting migration from the US, made slavery illegal, and declared everyone in Mexico has to be Catholic. This was largely ignored, and led to conflict and the Texas Revoltuion, where Texas considered itself an independent country until being annexed by the US. Mexico did not consider them independent at all, and war between Mexico and the US broke out when the US defended Texas.

Trail of Tears

After Andrew Jackson ignored the order of the Supreme Court to allow native tribes like the Cherokee to remain in their homeland around Georgia, many people were forced to leave their homes. This caused them to be forced to go towards Oklahoma, where there are still reservations today. Many people died along the way, which gave it its name.

Louisiana Purchase

December 20, 1803

Napoleon and France were in need of money due to all of the wars they were conducting, and they were not doing anything with the Louisiana Territory, so they decided to sell it to Thomas Jefferson. This was controversial because it went against Jeffersonian Republican ideas of a strict interpretation of the Constitution

Oregon Territory

August 14, 1848

President James K. Polk really wanted to expand westward and deeply believed in Manifest Destiny, so his main focus during presidency was to expand the country to the Pacific Ocean. The Oregon Territory was originally to setlle a border dispute with the US and Britain, which happened with the Oregon Treaty in 1846.

California Gold Rush
