The Five Rights of CDS

Right Information: Evidence-based guidelines and patient-specific information

Right People: Providers, healthcare teams, and patients

Right Formats: Clinical Decision Support

Right Channels: Electronic health records

Right Times: Integrated into clinical workflows

Patient Scenario

  • While visiting her grandparents in Florida, Sasha gets caught up in a wave at the beach
  • She strikes the ground on her right arm, and sustains an impressive abrasion to her arm
  • She initially feels ok, and her grandfather tells her to “shake it off”
  • After about 5 days of worsening pain and increasing drainage and redness from the damaged skin, her grandfather decides to take Sasha to the emergency room for evaluation

Active CDS

1) You are the physician on duty when Sasha arrives, and you open her chart. What do you see?

2) “Push” or “Active” CDS is when the user receives information that they were neither requesting or expecting

3) It appears because of EHR activity, or certain step in a workflow

Passive CDS

1) There is concern that Sasha may have cellulitis, so you open this order-set

2) Passive CDS is when information is given to you in a workflow you have already initiated

Thank you!

Correct!

Active CDS can be interruptive to a person’s workflow. When able, try and use passive CDS unless it is an emergent or urgent alert.
