UNIT 1. HOW DO MAPS HELP US TO FIND PLACES?

Types of maps.
What will we study?
A map is a representation of an area on a flat surface. Maps help us to locate places. Un mapa es una representación de un lugar en una superficie plana. Nos ayuda a ubicar sitios.
1. TYPES OF MAPS.
There are 3 types of maps: political, physical and street maps. Hay 3 tipos de mapas: político, físico y callejero.
1. TYPES OF MAPS.
Physical maps show natural features of the Earth: oceans, seas, rivers, lakes and mountains. Mapas físicos muestran accidendes naturales de la Tierra: océanos, mares, ríos, lagos y montañas.
Political maps show continents, countries, regions and cities. Mapas políticos muestras continentes, países, regiones y ciudades.
Street maps use symbols to indicate places: a town hall, museums, parks or stations. Los calllejeros utilizan símbolos para indicar lugares: ayuntamiento, museos, parques o estaciones.
2. ELEMENTS OF A MAP.
The key tells us what each symbol represents. La leyenda nos dice lo que representa cada símbolo.
The title tells us the place represented. El título muestra el lugar representado.
The compass shows: N, S, E and W. La brújula muestra: N, S, E y O.
Symbols represent different things as rivers, schools, parks, etc. Los símbolos representas diferentes cosas como ríos, colegios, parques, etc.
The scale shows distances between places. La escala muestra la distacia entre los lugares.
A world map is a flat representation of the Earth. It has different lines that help us to locate places:

- Longitude lines.
- Latitude lines.
But... what is a globe?
Globes are different from world maps. They represent the Earth as a sphere. They have an axis in the middle.

The equator is an imaginary line. It divides the Earth into 2 parts: north hemisphere and south hemisphere.
Longitude lines are vertical.
Latitude lines are horizontal.
