What is my class for?
What is AI for?
LLM's exist in an attempt to replace workers who do intellectual labor
My class exists to help students develop the knowledge and skills for scientific problem solving
Integrated Science/Chemistry requires students to gain experience with determining the right analytical tools for a given problem
ChatGPT and Copilot allow users to skip the process of developing ideas and skills
Finding quality sources is an essential skill
AI is reasonably good at detecting when AI has been used
Philosophy of technology
- Technology of any type (from language to sophisticated analytical tools like R) is built for a specific purpose and need to be used appropriately. Using a microscope as a hammer works, but is less than optimal. In the same way I wouldn't allow a 1st grader to use a calculator to learn addition, I won't allow a high schooler to use ChatGPT to do their thinking for them.
- Students must practice the process of using the tool of science. Encountering, engaging with, and then producing novel ideas from preexisting ones in a rigourous framework is essential. This is disrupted when students skip steps by either copying and pasting from other humans' work or from generated text.
- The cognitive effects of using these systems along with learning is unknown and until it can be proven to be both safe (in protecting students private data) or nondeleterious to development these tools will not be used in my class.

The use of AI or any material not made by the student for that assignment will not be tolerated for any reason except as a cited source. This includes but is not limited to:
- - brainstorming,
- -diagrams
- - corrections or editing (other than spelling or grammar).
This class is about learning to use your mind to solve problems and without practice students will be unable to work through these processes. This policy applies equally to me, I do not use any generated material in order to ensure I am abiding by the same standards. The only time I will use AI is for generating materials in languages that I do not write in or to detect AI.
Possible Problems
AI (at the time of writing this) is a rapidly growing market that is being externally introduced to every industry to what can generously be called mixed results. Students will need to understand how these systems function and possibly how to use them. By opting out of their use in my class students might be at a disadvantage if it turns out these tools are useful in their lives with relation to their understanding of scientific principles.
