I Can: -define Matter and its states

What is Matter?

Properties of Matter:-mass -volume -density

Almost everything is made of matter!

Matter is anything that takes up space.

Matter can be natural or man-made.

YOU MATTER!

What do you notice?

Gas (water vapor)
Liquid (water)
Solid (ice)

Matter Exists in 3 Main States

Solid

Liquid

Gas

Now You Try!

Use cereal to show how molecules are arranged in each of the 3 states of matter.

What is matter?

Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space.

The three main states of matter are solid, liquid, and gas.

Tomorrow!

Changes in temperature and pressure can cause matter to change phases.

Characteristics of Gases

Gases have neither a fixed shape nor a fixed volume.

They have low density and are highly compressible (can easily squish).

They exhibit pressure, temperature, and volume properties known as the Gas Laws.

Characteristics of Liquids

Liquids have a definite volume but NOT a definite shape.

Liquids can flow and take the shape of their container.

Liquids cannot be compressed (squished) easily.

Characteristics of Solids

Solids have a definite shape and volume.

The molecules in solids are tightly packed together.

Solids can only change shape under external force.
