Astronaut Facts!

Challenge #4

CHALLENGE #4

READ THE TEXT:

Astronauts are slightly taller in space! Without gravity, their spines stretch, and they grow about 5 cm taller until they return to Earth. There are no showers, so astronauts use special shampoo and wet wipes because water would float away. As the space station orbits Earth every 90 minutes, they see 16 sunrises and sunsets each day! They sleep in sleeping bags on the wall so they don’t drift away while they sleep. Life in space is very different, and astronauts must be brave and ready for new challenges.

Challenge #4

CHALLENGE #4

ANSWER:

  1. Why do astronauts grow taller in space, and what happens when they return to Earth?
  2. If the space station orbits Earth every 90 minutes, how many sunrises would astronauts see in 3 hours? Explain your reasoning.
  3. What is one example that shows astronauts must be “brave and ready for new challenges”? Explain your answer using evidence from the text.
  4. Why can astronauts not take normal showers in space, and what do they use instead?
  5. Why do astronauts sleep in sleeping bags attached to the wall? What problem does this solve?

Option 2:Design a Space Suit

Draw and label your own astronaut suit! What cool tools or gadgets does it have to help you on your next mission?

Option 1: Astronaut’s Log

Pretend you’re an astronaut! Write or record what happened during your escape — what did you see, feel, or discover in space?

I’m called the Red Planet because of my rusty color. Robots love to visit me!

Mars hint:

Jupiter completes one full spin in just 10 hours.

Venus has thick clouds that trap heat, making it even hotter than Mercury.

Pluto was reclassified as a dwarf planet in 2006.

It's Saturn

I’m covered in thick yellow clouds and hotter than any other planet—even hotter than Mercury!

Venus hint:

I’m the farthest from the Sun and the windiest planet in the solar system.

Neptune hint:

Jupiter is bigger than all the other planets combined.

You can’t miss my shiny rings! They’re made of ice and rock.

Saturn hint:

Mercury is both the smallest planet and the closest one to the Sun in our solar system.

I’m the only planet with air, water, and life. You live here!

Earth hint:

CELEBRATE WITH THE WINNER

You earned an Alien Translator! What will you ask them?

5-8 Stars ⭐

You earned a Rocket Ship! Where will you travel? Why

9+ Stars ⭐

You discovered a New Planet! What will you name it? Why?

1-4 Stars ⭐

I’m the biggest planet and have a huge red storm that’s been swirling for hundreds of years.

Jupiter hint:

Uranus has a 98-degree tilt, causing it to spin almost horizontally.

Winds on Neptune can reach over 1,200 mph — faster than jets!

Mars appears red because iron oxide (rust) covers its surface.

...

Saturn’s rings are made of ice and rock, making them very bright and easy to see.

I’m the closest planet to the Sun and the smallest one too! I have no moons and I’m super hot during the day.

Mercury hint:

Uranus hint:

I roll around the Sun on my side! I’m light blue and super cold.
