Job Function's

An important job function is training. Professional players must train and work out daily to gain strength, improve skills, improve stamina, practice better accuracy, and have faster reaction time. All this includes practicing footwork, hand movements, and certain ways of shooting the bird to hit faster. To play badminton, you would hit the shuttlecock (called a bird) to the opponent, trying to score a point by making the opponent lose/miss their shot! To reach this level, players normally practice up to multiple times a day, for several hours straight! The racket looks like a tennis racket, but smaller and thinner. The bird is made of feathers or plastic and is in a cone like shape.

Introduction

Professional Badminton Player

My chosen career is a professional badminton player. This career involves competing with vast knowledge of badminton to represent their country or team during a game or tournament! Being a professional badminton player is not just playing the game, but also requires the player to put in hard work and determination to fully learn the sport, learn the strategies, the techniques, and also need a passion for this sport! This sport is not just about hitting the bird, but also developing skill, handling pain (not so much, but there will be pain), and when playing, players will give it their best, so there will be no space for mercy!

Main Types of shots!

  • Smash- a downward shot aimed to the floor to be unreachable for the opponent
  • Clear- a high shot aimed to the back of the court to be un-hitable for the opponent, sending them across the court to the back

Average Pay & Schedule

The Average pay for a professional badminton player is ranked anywhere between 25,000 and over 150,000 per year, depending on their status, skill level, team/sponsorship, and how many tournament wins a player wins in a year! Their work schedule includes training 5-6 days per week, and anywhere from 4-10 hours a day! That includes on court, off court, the gym, workouts, and game training!

Environment and Conditions

Their work setting is mostly indoor courts, the gym, or even at matches. Not only this, but some take it as far as doing physical therapy to gain more strength and improve muscle reflexes. Their job conditions are hard to put up with as they involve long hours of training, pressure to win, and being at their best performance when playing. Though their tight schedules might affect their personal life, they gain skills like balance, muscle reflexes, a faster recovery, and a chance to stay healthy and moving while doing something the player has a passion for!

Information on Knowledge
Abilities and Technology

Knowledge needed for this career is the rules, techniques of badminton, training, injury prevention, to prevent getting hurt, game strategies, and, most importantly, Teamwork! Teamwork is highly needed because, without it, ur game will not be in sync and hard to understand your teamates next move. Without these factors, a player will not be able to play properly! Technology used and needed for badminton is smartwatches because they track your heart rate, speed, and reaction time. Racket and Bird Technology, because they record the speed, shot accuracy, and force used when hitting. Video analysis recorder, the classic, used to record matches and games, also used to see the opponents strategies and analyse them before a game. (This gives the player a thought of how they will play and what their next move might be)

Loughborough University

Loughborough University is located in the UK. It is one of the best sports universities in the world. To get into this university, you need at least a 3.2-4.0 GPA, an overall average of about 75%-85%, about 30,000 per year (international students), but for UK students it only costs 11,900 per year! This university has both indoor and outdoor courts, pools, gyms, research labs, and athletic performance centers! Attending Loughborough University would directly help the career of a professional badminton player because the university provides all types of training spaces, the coaches there are certified professionals, and studying here will give high chances of national competition opportunities! Their program for badminton is set for the players to perform at national and international matches/tournaments. Their program includes 15-18 hours on court, 3 times a week.

Education Path

Most professionals start playing/training at the age of 12. Some people who join classes learn basic shots, hand movements, leg movements, and other skills needed to play a simple game. The next step would be to enroll in a team or a club, to officially start playing tournaments with other people. This also allows the player to get more techniques and learn different styles of playing. For this sport to be a career, people often pursue degrees in sports science, physical education. Taking a sports science degree will help by giving a deeper understanding of the movements and strategies used, teaching proper ways of playing, and hidden ways to not get hurt! (like twisting an ankle)
