Info

This tradition takes place every 23rd of December in the city of Oaxaca in the south of Mexico

Cultural Meaning

  • During this event, people create amazing sculptures made entirely out of radishes
  • These sculptures can represent many different things: animals, people, churches, or Mexican and Christmas stories.

When it started?

  • The tradition started more than a hundred years ago.
  • Today, hundreds of artists and families spend days preparing their sculptures, and thousands of people visit Oaxaca to see them.
  • In the end, all the sculptures are displayed for just one night, because the radishes dry out very quickly.

Why i choose this one?

What I find fascinating about this festival is how something so ordinary like a radish can become a form of art and cultural expression. It shows how creative, joyful, and proud Mexican people are of their traditions. It’s not just a competition; it’s also a celebration of imagination, community, and identity. Personally, I think The Night of the Radishes is one of the most creative traditions in the world, and I would love to see it in person someday.
