Examples of emergencies are:

  • an injured or ill person who needs medical attention and cannot be moved
  • a fire or an explosion
  • downed electrical wires
  • rapidly rising flood waters
  • a person who is drowning
  • the presence of poisonous gas
  • a vehicle accident
  • breathing problems
  • persistent abdominal pain or pressure or suspected poisoning that appears to be life-threatening
  • severe external bleeding or vomiting blood or passing blood
  • severe burns
  • chest pain, discomfort, or pressure lasting more than a few minutes that goes away and comes back or that radiates to the shoulder, arm, neck, jaw, stomach, or back
  • signs or symptoms of stroke and seizures
  • suspected or obvious injuries to the head, neck, or spine
  • suspected or obvious broken bone

In case of an emergency immediately call 911. Then if you are trained in CPR, check for a pulse in the wrist or the neck of the victim using your index finger. Also, check if the person is breathing. Next, place one palm in the center of the person’s chest, and put your other palm on the back of the first palm. Push hard and to the beat of “Stayin' Alive” until help arrives. Performing CPR on a person who is breathing and has a pulse is harmful!

First aid is guided by the “Three Ps.” These three principles guide first aid actions.

  • Prevent further injury.
  • Preserve life.
  • Promote recovery.
Injuries might also occur in the water. If someone needs to be rescued from the water, remember these things.
  • Do not put yourself in trouble going to rescue someone drowning.
  • Look out for help, and try to find a rope or stick to pull the victim out of the water.
  • You have to avoid getting into the water yourself.

Knowing the seven golden rules of self-defense will give you extra confidence and help you escape an attack.

  • Be aware of your surroundings at all times.
  • Walk confidently, and avoid eye contact.
  • Avoiding physical confrontation is the safest approach to self-defense.
  • Whoever attacks first typically wins in self-defense. You should only fight for your life.
  • Remember the three critical strike zones—eyes, throat, and groin.
  • Yell at the top of your lungs for help as you run away.
  • If you attack first, keep attacking. Hitting the critical strike zone five times at full force or until the culprit is incapacitated.
