- Veteran's Day, No School 11/11
- Thanksgiving Break 11/26-28
Hello OC Community,
November is upon us. The clocks are adjusted and the holiday season is rapidly approaching. Our clubs are up and running and well attended. Fall sports teams are wrapping up and Winter sports teams are preparing for an exciting season of competition. The Drama Club is busy rehearsing for their Fall production. The first weekend of December they will be performing William Shakespeare’s comedy Much Ado about Nothing.
Mr. Mare and our students are coordinating Holiday meals for Thanksgiving. If you know of any family in need of some help please contact the main office at (508) 763-8011.
The food pantry club has been working hard to restock, and they will be ready to open on November 3rd. If you would like to contribute to the pantry, donations may be dropped off anytime in the Cougar's Den or the main office. Thank you for your continued support. If you have any questions about the food pantry, please reach out to Ms. Ulett at aulett@oldcolony.info.
As the seasons change and our students progress we strive to provide the consistency that community brings.
I hope you all have a great Thanksgiving break wherever you may travel.
Sincerely,
Gary

STEM News
Across the Curriculum- Last year our entire staff embarked on a literacy journey in writing. Teachers in every subject were trained in writing effective questions that would prompt students to think critically about a text and write well-supported claims. Students practiced writing in every subject on a regular basis. While we saw growth in students’ writing skills, we will enrich our literacy practices this year with integrating close reading skills and grammar. We look forward to sharing the results of our efforts with you.
Science-
We are excited to share that Old Colony has been awarded a grant from the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center in the amount of $65,000. These funds have made it possible to purchase cutting-edge equipment such as new Chromebooks, spectrometers, and digital microscopes that make science come to life for students! This equipment is available to all of our science teachers for classroom use. We hope that the additional opportunities students have to see what scientific equipment can show us will spark their imaginations and ignite a passion for STEM.
In addition to our new resources, we have had two Cougar Time Zoom presentations on STEM-related careers. These presentations were hosted by scientists from Cambridge-based biotech, BioAgylitics, who described STEM roles and answered students’ questions. We continue to pursue additional opportunities for students to learn about science and technology careers. Math-
In order to support student learning in mathematics, we have begun to introduce students to Delta Math. Delta Math is an online learning tool students can use to review previously learned math concepts or to look ahead to more challenging content. From basic to advanced levels of difficulty, students can find practice problems to work on independently. Delta Math even provides multiple attempts and hints for students who may need a little help along the way. Students can access Delta Math by signing into the Clever portal. Ask your student about Delta Math and practice together. It’s fun!
Academic Support Services
In addition to Cougar Time, a support period that is built into each student’s schedule, we offer several other ways in which students can get extra help or learn something new.
Cougar Connection
Cougar Connection provides opportunities for students to receive extra help, study with friends, work on projects, or use the maker space. Students can sign in to Cougar Connection in the library every Monday through Thursday after school.
After School Days
All teachers are available on either Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday of each week. Students should be sure to take advantage of this time. Check teachers’ Google Classrooms for availability.
Saturday Success
Students who have fallen behind on their assignments are encouraged to attend Saturday Success. Saturday Success provides several consecutive hours of supervision and assistance to facilitate students’ completion of work in a quiet, supportive environment alongside qualified instructors. Referrals for Saturday Success must come from teachers, but students may request a teacher referral. Our next Saturday Success session is scheduled for November 22nd. The hours are 8:00am to 11:00am.
LATE BUS
We have late buses available Tuesday and Thursday every week, with the exception of half days or days when we don’t have school. However, students who drive or can arrange for a ride home are welcome to remain in Cougar Connection until 4:30 if they remain under teacher supervision.
