Find Me

Find two words that suggest the Grendilock is looking for Cadno:

Maybe the howl I heard that first night in the tree house wasn’t a dream after all. Maybe the Grendilock really is here, prowling the streets in the shape of a terrible hound. A hound…perfect for hunting foxes.

Lippy edges closer and carefully reaches out. Cadno watches her guardedly. I’m about to tell Lippy to withdraw her hand, but then he does the unthinkable – he extends his neck and licks her fingers. A few seconds later, he leans into her touch. “He’s warm, Charlie!” Lippy gasps in astonishment as she ruffles him between the ears. “It’s like putting my hand into a sunbeam!” Cadno tilts his head to the side, his pointed ears slanted floppily, and to my surprise he clambers from my lap and waddles over to Lippy. He props himself up on her knees and starts to kiss her until Lippy falls back, squealing with glee as the portly little cub climbs all over her. “Charlie, he’s amazing!” Roo smiles as he joins in. Cadno can’t seem to decide how to divide his time fairly between them, so he flits from one to the other like a loveable meteorite. A kiss for Lippy, a kiss for Roo. His fur is shimmering again, but this time it’s with excitement rather than anxiety. “I’m glad you like him!” I laugh along with them. “He definitely likes you!” They carry on like this for another few minutes. Finally, Lippy and Roo crawl away, both of them panting, exhausted from all the laughter. Cadno trots over and plants a sloppy wet peck on my arm, as though to tell me that he hasn’t forgotten about me.

“Charlie, he’s incredible!” Lippy pants. “You’re so lucky you get to look after him!” “Actually, that’s sort of why I let you in on the secret.” “What do you mean?” asks Lippy, and then her face lights up. “Ooh, do you need babysitters? Because I am definitely on board for that!” “Sort of,” I reply. “It’s just that summer’s about to start, and if I didn’t tell you about him I’d have to keep him a secret and probably avoid you both the whole time. Now that you know, I was hoping you could help me look after him. Especially if there might be a monster wandering around, looking for him.” “You don’t know for sure that the Grendilock thing has come after him, though, do you?” says Lippy. “That dog people have seen could just be somebody’s lost pet.” I shuffle about uncomfortably. She’s got a point – but I can’t help feeling that she’s wrong on this one. There was something so unnatural about the howl I heard. Something wrong.
