É um serviço de diretório da Microsoft que armazena informações sobre utilizadores, computadores e outros recursos numa rede e gere o seu acesso. O Active Directory simplifica a vida dos administradores e utilizadores finais, ao mesmo tempo que aumenta a segurança das organizações.

É um protocolo de gestão de redes que atribui automaticamente um endereço IP e outros parâmetros de comunicação a dispositivos ligados à rede. Por exemplo, na maioria das redes de Wi-Fi domésticas o router funciona como servidor DHCP, atribuindo endereços IP aos dispositivos que a ela se ligam. Implementar este protocolo poupa tempo e evita o erro humano.
